Lanzarote: Paradise is very close
Pure nature, landscapes of enigmatic contrasts, attractive underwater and volcanic scenes, arid and desert land, oasis and palm trees, 200 km. of coastline with fine white, gold and black sand, a privileged climate... The beautiful island of Lanzarote has much to offer. Declared Biosphere Reserve by Unesco, blends modern and bustling tourist resorts with small white houses, unspoilt areas, landscapes that appear in films like Hace un millón de años, Los abrazos rotos, Invasor, In the Heart of Sea, amongst others.
Lanzarote is a caprice of nature, shaped with flair by its volcanic past and human touch. Nowadays it is impossible to imagine this island without the brilliance of César Manrique, one of its most international son/citizen. Life in the renown Tierra del Fuego goes on quietly, unaware of the tedious worldy problems./tedious problems of the rest of the world. Main Highlights: the lunar appearance of Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, Jameos del Agua, Los Verdes Cave, Mirador del Río… Those who are gourmets can savour its excellent gastronomy, wines and malmseys D.O. Lanzarote (certificate of origin). A land of history and tradition, visited by many artists seeking for inspiration. However, visiting this paradise is very risky … you may want to stay there forever… like Omar Sharif or José Saramago.
Los Jameos del Agua, like the Los Verdes Cave, are located inside the volcanic tunnel created by the eruption of La Corona Volcano over 3.000 years ago. It is one of island's most symbolic places and is known as César Manrique's first work in Lanzarote (1968), for the volcanic formatios and its natural beauty.
It owes its name to the existence of an internal lake made up of at least three jameos or openings in the ground: the Jameo Chico, which gives access to the interior; the Jameo Grande; and a third, known as the Jameo de la Cazuela. Next to the Jameos you will find Casa de los Volcanos, a museum dedicated to vulcanology and an investigation centre.
DISCOVER A NATURAL GEM
After passing through a small entrance, you will descend an clever spiral staircase made of volcanic rock and wood, that allows us to discover, little by little from the top, the first stop: the Jameo Chico. In this space, you will notice abundant vegetation. Following the same staircase you will reach Jameo Grande, a singular space 100 metres long and 30 metres wide. It has a beautiful garden and a large swimming pool designed by César Manrique.
Perfectly built in the landscape you will find two bars, a dance floor and a concert hall with great acoustics integrated in the volcanic cave. It is the perfect place for concerts, plays and ballet.
LOS JAMEITOS, A SYMBOL
In between the two Jameos you will find a natural salt-watered lake and amazing crystal clear waters, as well as more than a dozen different species such as Jameitos or blind crabs (Munidopsis polymorpha). This species is blind and albino after living for milleniums inside the volcanic grottoe.
In spite of the 5.000 square metres, you will find an organised garden perfectly fitted in the agricultural environment of Guatiza, in the town of Teguise.
César Manrique's creative inventiveness transformed an old volcanic ash quarry into an interesting cactus garden with over 7.200 specimen of 1.100 different species from the Canaries and countries such as Peru, Mexico, Chile, United States, Kenia, Tanzania and Morrocco.
In the top part of the garden you will find an old windill, restored and transformed into a restaurant by Manrique.
DID YOU KNOW
Guatiza was of great economic importance during the 19th century thanks to the prickly pear plantations. For decades the pigmentation was used as a dye for textiles or carmine.
You will find the monument in Lanzarote's geographical centre, in a signficant crossroads from where you can access any place on the island. It is exactly at this point where you can see several outstanding agricultural images: La Guería and enarenados del Jable.
César Manrique chose an exceptional location to exhibit one of his most symbolic work: Casa-Museo del Campesino y Monumento a la Fecundidad (1968).
Fecundidad stands out isolated, over the horizon, a 15 metre sculpture dedicated to the local peasant. Inside, you can observe several objects and tools related to the islander culture and agriculture.
Timanfaya is one of the best lanscapes of Lanzarote. In the 18th and 19th century, after the volcanic eruptions, Lanzarote's landscape changed forever. Ever since that moment a quarter of its territory remained buried under a thick layer of ashes and sea of lava.
The result of this is a breathtaking landscape with remarkable reliefs, protected since 1974 under the National Park distinction.
VOLCANO ROUTE
We recommend following the Ruta de los Volcanos (Volcano Route) or Montañas del Fuego. 14 kilometres that have been prepared for visitors to enjoy this special location through roads that are perfectly fitted in the environment and designed by César Manrique and Jesús Soto.
Walking around the craters or on a dromedary are always a unique experience to enjoy an unforgettable holiday. Along the journey you will be able to see what vulcanologists call geothermical faults, that produce unusual temperatures on the surface.
During the journey, on the islote de Hilario, you can find a restaurant-viewpoint El Diablo, designed by Manrique.
Lanzarote is an ideal destination to enjoy the beach, 365 days a yeard. It has an annual average temperature of 22º and more than 300 annual sun days. We recommend filling your suitcase with beach clothes, suntan lotion and a light jersey for night time. The geographical contrasts have created several microclimates that make it more interesting to travel around this beautiful island.
In Lanzarote, the influence of César Manrique (1919-1992, Arrecife) is more than evident. His work admired in Lanzarote and abroad, is based on architecture in perfect harmony with nature. It was on his return from New York in 1966, when this universal citizen from Lanzarote when he took the decision of transforming his homeland in one of the most admired sites in the world, without altering its essence. “For me Lanzarote was the most beautiful place on Earth... so I decided to show its beauty to the world”. Today we can say that he achieved it. Many people think that this versatile artist’s best piece of art is Lanzarote. Precisely, it is in/on this island where he achieved the turn nature to art. Gifted with a unique imagination and creative impulse, he knew like no one did, the aspects of the landscapes and traditions of the island. Discover Lanzarote through César Manrique’s eyes, represented by his work: Mirador del Río, los Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, Jardín de Cactus, Museo de Arte Moderno, Fundación César Manrique, Monumento al Campesino, Juguetes del Viento...
