Arrecife: Full of life

A lively city, open to the ocean, capital of Lanzarote, it offers the visitor an interesting nightlife, beautiful beaches and unique landscapes, such as its bay and el Charco de San Ginés Formerly a fishermen and craftsmen’s land, is nowadays a dynamic city open to the ocean, where you will find an interesting nightlife. Capital and hub of Lanzarote, Arrecife amazes the world for its genuine marine and commercial character, its historical dock’s activity, and its lively bay and marina. A place of passage between continents, it was named after its reefs and rocks, originated by ancient volcanic eruptions at present dotting its coastline. The beautiful El Reducto beach, awarded with the Blue Flag, offers lively promenades full of fashion shops, splendid restaurants and well-priced traditional bazaars.

Arrecife is a place to walk, to listen and leisurely enjoy  the sound of the sea. Amongst its jewels/gems you have el Charco de San Ginés, where small boats lay. While strolling through this village you will find small fishermen’s houses, the popular church of San Ginés and islets forming one of the most beautiful images on the island. Renowned land of history and culture, the castles of San Gabriel and San José, the latter transformed into the International Modern Art Museum, reveal to the visitor its past marked by pirate and corsair sieges. At this point you can enjoy the gastronomy offered by Restaurant Qué Muac, a successful mixture of traditional and nouvelle cuisine; gastronomy and art.

Arrecife: Full of life

Los Jameos del Agua

Los Jameos del Agua, like the Los Verdes Cave, are located inside the volcanic tunnel created by the eruption of La Corona Volcano over 3.000 years ago. It is one of island's most symbolic places and is known as César Manrique's first work in Lanzarote (1968), for the volcanic formatios and its natural beauty.

It owes its name to the existence of an internal lake made up of at least three jameos or openings in the ground: the Jameo Chico, which gives access to the interior; the Jameo Grande; and a third, known as the Jameo de la Cazuela. Next to the Jameos you will find Casa de los Volcanos, a museum dedicated to vulcanology and an investigation centre.

DISCOVER A NATURAL GEM

After passing through a small entrance, you will descend an clever spiral staircase made of volcanic rock and wood, that allows us to discover, little by little from the top, the first stop: the Jameo Chico. In this space, you will notice abundant vegetation. Following the same staircase you will reach Jameo Grande, a singular space 100 metres long and 30 metres wide. It has a beautiful garden and a large swimming pool designed by César Manrique.

Perfectly built in the landscape you will find two bars, a dance floor and a concert hall with great acoustics integrated in the volcanic cave. It is the perfect place for concerts, plays and ballet.

LOS JAMEITOS, A SYMBOL

In between the two Jameos you will find a natural salt-watered lake and amazing crystal clear waters, as well as more than a dozen different species such as Jameitos or blind crabs  (Munidopsis polymorpha). This species is blind and albino after living for milleniums inside the volcanic grottoe.

Cactus Garden

In spite of the 5.000 square metres, you will find an organised garden perfectly fitted in the agricultural environment of Guatiza, in the town of Teguise.

César Manrique's creative inventiveness transformed an old volcanic ash quarry into an interesting cactus garden with over 7.200 specimen of 1.100 different species from the Canaries and countries such as Peru, Mexico, Chile, United States, Kenia, Tanzania and Morrocco.

In the top part of the garden you will find an old windill, restored and transformed into a restaurant by Manrique.

DID YOU KNOW

Guatiza was of great economic importance during the 19th century thanks to the prickly pear plantations. For decades the pigmentation was used as a dye for textiles or carmine.

Monumento al campesino

You will find the monument in Lanzarote's geographical centre, in a signficant crossroads from where you can access any place on the island. It is exactly at this point where you can see several outstanding agricultural images: La Guería and enarenados del Jable.

César Manrique chose an exceptional location to exhibit one of his most symbolic work: Casa-Museo del Campesino y Monumento a la Fecundidad (1968)

Fecundidad stands out isolated, over the horizon, a 15 metre sculpture dedicated to the local peasant. Inside, you can observe several objects and tools related to the islander culture and agriculture.

Monumento al campesino

Timanfaya is one of the best lanscapes of Lanzarote. In the 18th and 19th century, after the volcanic eruptions, Lanzarote's landscape changed forever. Ever since that moment a quarter of its territory remained buried under a thick layer of ashes and sea of lava.

The result of this is a breathtaking landscape with remarkable reliefs, protected since 1974 under the National Park distinction.

VOLCANO ROUTE

We recommend following the Ruta de los Volcanos (Volcano Route) or Montañas del Fuego. 14 kilometres that have been prepared for visitors to enjoy this special location through roads that are perfectly fitted in the environment and designed by César Manrique and Jesús Soto.

Walking around the craters or on a dromedary are always a unique experience to enjoy an unforgettable holiday. Along the journey you will be able to see what vulcanologists call geothermical faults, that produce unusual temperatures on the surface.

During the journey, on the islote de Hilario, you can find a restaurant-viewpoint El Diablo, designed by Manrique.

Lanzarote: a gastronomic island

Gastronomy, without any doubt, is a way of living the island's culture. Lanzarote's cuisine, as that of the other islands, has a Spanish background, however, it has strong African and Latin-American influences, as well as from ancient traditions that go back to the aboriginals. The international cuisine offered a the main tourist resorts harmonises with the traditional dishes such as mojos, gofios and fish. Lanzarote’s cuisine amazes for its delicious simplicity and the way the food is made.  Set out a genuine gastronomic trip through soups, vegetable soups and ropa vieja, excellent meat, goat cheese, its volcanic broths and malmseys... And for gourmets and food lovers, a gastronomy that blends the best traditional cuisine with innovating techniques. Delicious.

The story of the Lady of the Volcanoes

During your stay in Lanzarote you will hear about the Lady of the Volcanoes, beloved patron saint of the island.  If you travel to Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, don’t miss the Hermitage of the Virgen de los Dolores, whom the islanders call de los Volcanes. The natives tell a story related to one of the terrible eruptions that occurred in this area, in which lava threatened to engulf the entire town; its inhabitants turned to the Virgin to stop the river of lava; and it stopped. To express their gratitude, they erected the Hermitage in honour of the Virgin in the same place where the miracle occurred. Nowadays, this chapel is visited by natives and foreigners during the Romerías, that are celebrated on the 31st July, which is the date of the extinction of the volcano, and when the Fiesta del Fuego is celebrated.
