Located only 30 km east of Faro, Tavira is also called "Queen of the Algarve". It is one of the richest cities of the Algarve from an architectural point of view, still showing the remains of several cultures that left their mark thoughout the centuries.
The city's historical past is rich and visible through the buildings found in the streets of its historical city centre. Also known as the "city of the small churches", it is isolated from the busiest resorts of the Algarve and it includes the spectacular Tavira Island and the fabulous Ria Formosa.
Its castle is the perfect place to appreciate the fantastic views of the city: the Roman bridge, the thirty-six churches, the narrow streets and the white houses. It is a perfect city for pleasant walks and at night, the illuminated bridge gives the landscape a magic touch, where you can find a great variety of restaurants.
A regular ferry departs from Tavira to Tavira Island, a beautiful sand island, 10 km long.
Nearby, don't miss out on one of the Algarve's best kept secrets, Caela Velha. A small fishing village painted in an inmaculate, white colour, located at the top of a valley with fantastic sea views, with a unique beauty and exuding peacefulness, it is capable of seducing even the most restless traveller.
