Formentera, located south of Ibiza, is the smallest inhabited island of the Balearics. Its trimmed shape make it an island with a great coastal extension (69 km2) in spite of being a small island. When arriving in Formentera, you will breathe in that feeling of peace and quiet that make it a different kind of place. The turquoise waters are unique for their clarity, recalling tropical landscapes. This is due to the greatest meadow of Posidonia (an autochthounous sea plant) of the Mediterranean sea, declared World Heritage by Unesco in 1999.
The island of Formentera is small but accessible and comfortable at the same time. You can travel across the island on a bicycle, through its green paths, its pine tree forests, its salt mines and through its rural interior. Its great environmental beauty and landscape, still unspoilt and wild, with dunes and well preserved beaches, greatly stand out. This is why no camping is allowed. Nowadays, the majority of Formentera's inhabitants live off of tourism, but still preserving ancient traditions. Only the natives' love for their land have made it possible to keep the island's identity throughout the years. Formentera is an island worth visiting and preserving.

Illetes Beach, in the north of the island and the nearest to Espalmador Isle, is the most visited by tourists. It is the most accessible beach for those who go to Formentera on a day trip due to its nearness to La Savina port. The lack of waves and the wide spectrum of turquoises make the water feel like a swimming pool. Even though it is the busiest beach, walking further down the last authorised parking you can find many quieter and almost desert-like stretches.
This is the longest beach in Formentera, with a 5 km extension that takes up all of the southern arch of the island. In it you can find a rocky and a sandy area. The great extension and geographical location make it one of the calmest beaches. It is accessible through several paths that cross the forest. The beach offers restaurants, hotels and water sports business, but not finding it extremely crowded.
La Mola lighthouse, in the west side of the island, is considered by many visitors like a magic place. Near the lighthouse you will find a a monolith placed in honour of writer Julius Verne and his mention of the island and the lighthouse in the book Héctor Servadac. The island's highest point is Sa Talaissa, at 195 metres. La Mola is a great starting point to the paths that cross the forests and enter the most rural and authentic landscapes of the island, away from the hustle and bustle of the tourists, except during the artisan market.
Es Cap de Barbaria is the highest point of the southern part of the island. This haven is where the feelings of loneliness and freedom come together. This is the place where the famous scene from the Spanish film Lucía y el sexo was shot. It is a magical place to admire the sunset for its great views of the isle of Es Vedrà. its loneliness and majesty can only be truly admired at the actual place. Not far from the lighthouse you can find a watchtower from the 18th century, Torre des Garroveret.
It is Formentera's main market, for the number of sellers and the number of visitors. It has become an important meeting point not only for the number of stalls but also for its busy atmosphere. In the central square you can usually find live music and in the surroundings there are bars with terraces. The idea to create this market came from artists and craftsmen and nowadays fights to preserve the initial concept: display, sell and promote local craftwork, making an alternative lifestyle possible.
Visiting the east coast, between La Savina port and Cala Saona, you can find a steep coast made up of a desert of strange rocks and odd shapes. It is known as Sa Pedrera, that used to be a quarry. You can visit this coast from the sea on a boat and enjoy its great marine richness. It is an ideal place for snorkelling for its shallow waters near the coast and the beauty of its sea floor with great presence of posidonia (local sea plant). There is also a forest area nearby where you can find finca Can Marroig, an area authorised for picnics and Sa Gavina watchtower. Route 4 of the Green Paths, Camí de Can Marroig, connects all of the main points of interest.
Walking up Camí de Sa Pujada is an experience that brings together heritage and nature, the sea, the past and the present. The path starts nearby Es Caló de Sant Agustí, a small, fishermen's village with a path, that was once used by Augustine monks that lived in La Mola. The path is filled with contrasts: pine trees with trunks twisted by the wind, rocks with bizarre shapes and La Mola cliffs. As you climb you will be surprised by the best panoramic views of the island. Its highest point is found at the viewpoint. At the end of the journey we recommend visiting Pilar de la Mola and its church, La Mola's Windmill and its well known Lighthouse.
Located in the capital of the island, this temple has an elegant appearance and the width of its walls reminds visitors of its ancient role as a fortification. The element that most stands out are its coated iron plates. The church was built from 1726 to 1728.
Except La Mola highlands, protected by its cliff, the rest of the island has five defence towers spread throughout the island's coast. Located in strategic places and visualing comunicating, they were used as a surveillance point to warn of any threat coming from the sea. Sa Guardiola Tower, located in s'Espalmador island, was the first built tower in 1749. In 1762 and 1763, the other four towers were built: Punta Prima, Gavina, Cap de Barbaria and Pi des Català. They are all circular with two levels. In 1949 they were declared monument and place of cultural heritage.
The Cap de Barbaria remains are evidence that this area of the island was densely populated from 1600-1000 BC. There are three different remains: a circle, a settlement and the huts. They have all provided significant discoveries such as ceramics, bones and a piece of bronze. You can access the settlement via the road that connects with the island's capital, Sant Francesc.
