“Excellent location, service and comfort at a reasonable price”

We were warmly welcomed and thoroughly enjoyed our 1-night stay. We usually stay at the Embassy Suites Saratoga Springs but were informed that they now require a 2-night minimum stay on weekends. Even if they had a room empty the day of, we would not be able to stay one Saturday night, the policy requires 2 nights, no exceptions. So we found our way to this delightful Holiday Inn on Broadway with plenty of free parking in their spacious lot, very comfortable bed, quiet room, super friendly staff, 24/7 hot water/tea/coffee in the lobby. We were able to walk to the bookstore and restaurants. Our one Saturday night stay between destinations was perfect, thanks to Holiday Inn Saratoga Springs.

I have to distinguish between the quality of the stay and pet policy on the one hadn't, which are great, and the marketing & billing, which have had me fuming all morning. On the plus side, we needed a stopover hotel for a one-night stay that would let us bring our puppy. This hotel has a pet fee, but no weight/service-only restrictions. Like every Holiday Inn I've stayed in, it's clean, solid furnishings, easily accessible and more than adequate. We had a king bed, and there was. plenty of room for the dog to splay out and sleep. Also conveniently located near the back door which lets out near a park area to walk the pupper. All of the dog families are in this wing of the hotel. Finally, there are lots of great dog-friendly restaurants about 2 blocks away on the other side of the park. OK, now for the grumpy old man rant: I used the app to book the stay. The app showed a $35/night pet fee. Fine. That's way better than the $75/night fee for the comparable offerings from other hotel groups in the area. The options were $161 for a king room, $180 for a king room with breakfast, and $189 for a "Pet getaway." The "pet getaway" advertises a water bowl, pet treats and waste bags provided at check in". Here's what they don't tell you: the $35 Pet fee is not included in the "pet getaway" rate. So instead of paying (161+35=$196) for the room, you're paying (189+35=$224) $28 more for the exact same room. And no, we didn't get a dog bowl, or a treat, or waste bags at check in; the kid at the front desk didn't know anything about that. Nor did he tell us that the pet fee was not included in the "pet getaway" rate. That was a surprise when the bill showed up in the morning. Maybe this is my own fault for failing to inquire at the time of check-in about the billing details of the "pet getaway" package. And I'm grateful that there are good hotels like this one that cater to pet owners. Moreover, that IHG doesn't charge the more exorbitant pet fees that others do. But instead of leaving Saratoga springs feeling like we got a great nights sleep and a simple stay, I can't help but feel miffed that I got slightly burned by a deceptive scam designed to chisel just a little more money out of the consumer. So in conclusion, it's a great hotel. I would still stay here. But next time, I'm choosing the base room and ignoring any cutesy offers about how pet-friendly they are.
