The entire hotel was recently and beautifully renovated and rebranded under the upscale Marriott Autograph Collection umbrella. Our 2nd floor King room with balcony and partial ocean view was spacious and squeaky clean. Everything is brand new and not yet showing any signs of wear and tear. The décor has a modern-boho vibe. Website pictures accurately represent the space. Not sure how the carpet and the velvet headboard will hold up to time and use. I personally question these two specific design decisions for cleanliness and longevity. Our bed was dreamy with crisp clean smelling sheets and soft lofty pillows. The bathroom was large but unremarkable; very basic – no luxe with a small shallow tub/shower combo that you would expect in a lower tier accommodation. Communal bath products stuck to the shower wall and the shower curtain was too long so you stepped on it while showering; not a fan. We had plenty of nice quality bath linens. Wifi was WEAK. Found out they neglected to place an “access point” in our room during renovation? Hopefully they have corrected this oversight for future guests. Empty mini-fridge to store personal drinks and snacks. No in-room coffee and no complimentary morning coffee in the lobby. Expect high resort prices for everything on property. For example; small glass of OJ for breakfast was $10 and side of toast $8. Housekeeping was hit or miss as we had to ask each day of our stay after our room had not been refreshed by 2:30 PM. Understaffed? Had to hunt down fresh towels more than once. We kept the Do Not Disturb sign on the last day bc it was simply a hassle waiting for them to show up. It took forever and several requests to get ice delivered to the room. Only parking option was valet at $68.36 per day tax inclusive. $50 per day “resort fee” but in a rare moment in time they give it back in resort credit each day. There are BEAUTIFUL indoor and outdoor common spaces to relax and chill. Pool is very nice but smallish with no real views other than a sliver of the ocean. ~20 or so chaise lounges, a handful of daybed/cabana’s and a few comfy conversation area’s. All first come first serve. Subtle music in common spaces; excellent overall vibe at this hotel for sure. Pool service was friendly and prompt. All the staff members we encountered during our stay were friendly and welcoming. The hotel location is optimum with easy access to the beach, the Pier and 3rd Street Promenade. It’s a long and wide beach; long way to the water on HOT sand! Santa Monica has changed drastically over the past 12 or so years and not in a good way. We found it to be quite dirty with trash strewn about and it smelled really bad when we were out and about exploring. You have to watch where you walk as the sidewalks were gross with animal and possibly human waste. There were many (dozens) of homeless lying around and wandering about. Some of them exhibited mildly aggressive behavior; screaming and such. It’s a sad and difficult situation. We didn’t get near the ocean bc there were warnings posted about high and dangerous levels of bacteria, a.k.a. poo. Many people were still swimming, surfing and enjoying the beach. The hotel itself was pretty fabulous so we happily stayed by the pool during most of our stay. Had a few nice but wildly overpriced meals around town (walking distance). Enjoyed the old-school and funky-cool Chez Jay one evening. LOVED touring the Getty Villa during our stay (6 mile drive). Sadly, I doubt we would return to Santa Monica. The price points are ridiculously high for the overall environment it has become and LA traffic is INSANE. We will stick to our tried and true Cali beach destinations further south. This was our experience.
