Rooms were clean and the bed very comfortable. Staff were very nice and professional. . The breakfast was excellent. The restaurant has been updated and the atmosphere along with the excellent food and service made our stay there. I would stay again.

The Hyatt Regency did not let me down. The staff seemed genuinely pleased to see me and went out of their way to support. I spoke with the manager several times, only because he introduced himself and asked how our stay was. Overall, it was a great experience.

Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine San Diego Spirited and Solicitous Service... but a Bit of a Schlep to the Beach 978953873 This 417-key, 16 story property boasts a super staff with high-touch, consistent, personalized service from pre-arrival through departure and post-stay follow-up. It’s clear that management and the front-line Hyatt colleagues are aligned on delivering an elevated, premium guest experience. But before you stay here, there are some things you may want to know. The hotel is located a couple miles from the beach as the crow flies and offers complimentary beach towels, chairs and sand toys. I pulled up Google maps and found the nearest beach located just over two miles away. With such close proximity, I decided to walk on over. Do not do this. First, La Jolla Village Drive in front of the hotel is more of a six lane freeway than a quiet village lane. It also appears that the Aventine real estate development where the property is located designed by post-modern starchitect Michael Graves is a bit on the skids. The Flemings Steak House and Truluck’s Seafood restaurants permanently closed last year and the only anchor tenants remaining in the 225,000 square foot office compound appears to be a WeWork and JLL. As such, the sidewalks in front of the hotel could use a little TLC, or at least a visit from a weed wacker to cut down some of the growth springing up in the cracks to heights of 3 and 4 feet. Then there’s the need to navigate multi-lane on and off-ramps to the 5 Freeway along with an overpass before a long hill up to and through the UC San Diego campus. And that’s the good part! After reaching the top of the hill, there’s a long, steep road down to Torrey Pines State Beach mostly populated by intrepid surfers trudging down to the break. After reaching the beach, however, but what to my wondering eyes should appear but all of my fellow beachgoers – 95% of whom were men – wearing no clothing! In addition to naturalists walking and relaxing on the beach there was even a group approximating the volleyball scene from TopGun Deux. Families may wish to select a different beach for their recreation. Returning to the hotel, I sought to calm my addled nerves with an expertly prepared Old Fashioned in the on-property Drift restaurant. My server was delightful and fellow revelers appeared to be enjoying the food and drink immensely. When I received the bill, along with the customary sales tax and line to add a tip was a 4% surcharge. Looking at the menu, the surcharge was to “help offset the cost of State and City minimum wage increases.” Huh? In other words, “We want to make more money off of you, but we won’t put the actual prices on our menu but instead add a kicker afterwards when you receive the bill.” By this logic, what's stopping the restaurant from listing the menu items at the original 1990 prices from when the hotel opened and then multiply by 2.4 as a “inflation adjustment surcharge” to account for the cumulative inflation rate since then? The post hoc charge moreover assumes the customers won’t be able to realize that their $25 smoked old fashioned is actually $26. Is anyone willing to pay $25 for a drink likely to pull up stakes and leave if the drink is $26? My two cents: This policy is likely to create far more ill-will than simply being up front about the menu pricing. The restaurant and lobby areas of the hotel benefit from a $10M Looney & Associates renovation completed in 2021 bright “coastal grey” color palette and are kept spotlessly clean. The guestrooms and hallways were last updated in 2015 and are overdue for a refresh. Over time, the hallway carpet through hard use and wear has faded to a color somewhere around puce. Although showing some signs of wear, my guest room had a comfortable bed and a large desk. It was relatively quiet to outside traffic noise save the occasional first responder siren or nocturnal Harley Davidson enthusiast. The louder noise came from inside the hotel as I was situated betwixt a group of guests that had two rooms catty-corner across the hall from each other from which they shuttled to and fro into the wee small hours of the morning exchanging spirited – and perhaps bibulous – conversation accompanied by slamming doors. That’s the luck of the draw of course, but if the hotel could consider some dampers on the doors during the next renovation; guests might rest easier. The scale of the property and its location make it focus on business travelers along with meetings, events and conventions, including 42,000 square feet of meeting space and two flagship ballrooms. Still, the hotel features a number of amenities that families in particular may find of interest: a junior Olympic heated pool, large jacuzzi, two tennis/pickleball courts, ping pong, a 24-hour fitness center and the requisite giant outdoor chess board. This hotel has a great staff and grand scale for corporate events and business travel. For families looking to enjoy a day at the beach, you have been forewarned!
