“Very nice”

The hotel was very nice, convenient to downtown San Diego. The desk clerk was helpful with food advice. It was exactly what I expected. The only complaint, the charge you 10 dollars daily parking fee. I was aware ahead of time.

Stayed 5 nights for a family trip with my two young kids in July. We chose here because of its location and its value. Overall the hotel was better than we expected for what it is, however there was one thing we didn’t know and we would not choose here next time for sure. ***Location and Parking*** The hotel is next to highway 163 in the north side of the city, if you are visiting San Diego for the theme parks, zoos, and beach, it is right in the middle, you would go north for Lego Land and Safari Zoo, go south for Sea World and downtown, and go west for the La Jolla beach, etc. Another reason we chose here is because the numerous Asian restaurants and supermarkets in the area, all of them within a mile or two, that makes it really convenient if you are Asian or like Asian food. Parking is $10 per night, I understand it is much more expensive in San Diego downtown, hotel circles, La Jolla, etc. Here I am not sure, especially there doesn’t seem to be any security monitoring on the parking lot. Saw other reviews saying their cars parked there got broke in, we didn’t see anything like that during our stay. Each space is very small too, if there is a truck parked in the 3 rows in the front of the hotel, other cars would have difficulty to even get through. ***Facility and Room*** Obviously this is a very old building like most Hampton Inn’s, it does look like it has been renovated multiple times, and it does look much better than some other Hampton Inn’s. The room is a typical hotel room size with window style A/C, so it is loud, and it is very cold if you sit at the desk (using computer, etc.) because the A/C blows directly to your face. Ceiling is the popcorn type and very low, which confirms how old the building is. Beds are okay and restroom is okay as well. One of the two elevators was in repair for the entire time we stayed there. The other one has a posted certificate hanging there that expired in 2020. One elevator was really not enough especially during the morning busy time and some other special times (see below). ***Hot Breakfast*** Hot breakfast is definitely a plus when you have young kids, so you don’t need to look for breakfast every morning. This hotel has the typical “hot breakfast” that all Hampton Inn’s offer. Simple things but sufficient and good enough. ***Staff*** Hotel staffs are okay in general. Most of the front desk people would greet you when you come in or go out. We didn’t use the housekeeping. Breakfast staffs are great, they kept cleaning and refilling different things. ***Kids Sports Teams???*** We heard of kids sports teams that travel to play and my kids are not in any travel teams, and we never encountered any before, but this time we really learned here. Apparently this hotel works with many kids sports teams traveling to the area. For the 5 nights we stayed, 4 nights had multiple teams. Now if you have kids in this type of traveling teams or you saw them before, you know what I am talking about. There were many elementary and middle school age kids with their parents and coaches all over the hotel, you cannot avoid them. They would be running around, screaming, making messes in the lobby, breakfast areas, and in the hallways on each floor. There would be shirtless boys running in the hallway up to midnight and knocking on doors randomly. The parents would sit together in the lobby and talk and laugh loud, and they would sit on the hallway floor (really) at night and talk all the way to midnight. There seemed to be a coach room next to us and the door just continued pounding for the whole day. You simply cannot sleep or rest, period. This hotel is actually on my company’s travel site as one of the preferred hotels, that’s another reason we booked here. Although I didn’t go there for a business trip this time, but if I did, I wouldn’t be able to work the next day since you cannot have a good rest at night at all. My company has business travels with hundreds of thousands hotel nights each year, I would have to report to our travel department to not list this hotel as a preferred hotel anymore as there is no way our employees can have good rest here. ***Overall*** For the star level of a Hampton Inn hotel, this particular hotel definitely met the expectation. However, if you need a place to have good rest and sleep, you might want to look somewhere else due to the number of kids sports teams staying here.
