We spent one night at this hotel following a late arrival into SLC. I generally look to Hilton for my accommodations when traveling and this property was consistent with other Homewoods I have visited. Our room was clean and comfortable. Garage parking was awkward but available. The neighborhood did seem a bit sketchy, but that might have been the mood set by the late arrival. This would have generally been an uneventful stay except for one generally minor thing, but a great big thing in the hospitality business: The staff at their complimentary breakfast area. We were there for only one morning (Labor Day) and 3 people were working. Perhaps it would be better to say 1 (older) woman was working while 2 (younger) people sat in the kitchen chatting. Several serving dishes on the buffet were empty, as was the coffee, with guests milling about waiting for refills. After a solid 10 minutes, I knocked on the kitchen door, and through the window of the door I could see the younger people still chatting. When they didn't acknowledge me, I opened the door slightly and excused myself. The younger female rolled her eyes and said, "Yes?" as if I were inconveniencing her. When I told her there was no more coffee the gentleman said, "Wahhh there is noooo coffeeeee!" In a whining falsetto. When she informed him I was there he set to work making another urn, and of course shortly thereafter the empty dishes were refilled. Not a major issue in the grand scheme of life. But for sure it set the tone of my check out from this facility. Would I stay here again? Maybe. But there are certainly other options to consider.

“Average at best”

Not a horrible stay, but this hotel is showing its age. A couple unimpressive staff interactions. First, right after checking in we noticed the table lamp next to the sofa was in bad shape, the bulb socket had separated from the lamp. We called and the maintenance guy came to get it and said he’d fix it, but after two nights there is no lamp and no replacement. Also, one of the bedside lamps had no light bulb and we noticed there was no paper towel holder nor paper towels in the kitchen. I called the front desk and the rep told me that they no longer had paper towel holders but would bring a roll of paper towels and a light bulb. When he got to the room he said that there were no additional light bulbs in the hotel and we’d get one the next day. We didn’t. We unscrewed one of the light bulbs in the bathroom area and used that. As a former hotel manager, I realize stuff happens, but the lack of follow up really isn’t acceptable. With that being said, this is still a decent property and being downtown within walking distance of restaurants is convenient.

The hotel itself was nice - clean spacious room and comfortable bed. Breakfast was good with a decent variety of food, although my coworker was annoyed they had a partisan political news channel on each morning (CNN). Had no issues with check-in and staff were helpful. My biggest complaint was the number of homeless in the area. During the day I felt safe but walked home one evening with several homeless people sleeping the street next to the hotel. There’s a homeless shelter about 1.5 blocks down the road so that’s probably the reason. Hotel did a good job with locking the front door and providing secure parking underground, but number of homeless people is definitely something to keep in mind. I realize this is not the hotel’s fault and SLC needs to build more shelters/housing.
