“Consistent and Comfortable”

Our first stop in Portland is the Best Western Plus Portland Airport. I’ve become a bit partial to Best Western Hotels. They are consistent and a bit nicer than some other chains. Not overly far from the airport on Airport Way near all the other airport hotels is the BW. The first thing we noticed is that the front door is locked. It is operated by the room key. Since we didn’t have a room key, we had to push a button to alert the desk clerk to open the door. A first for us. The desk clerk was most accommodating. Their elevator was out of order so I had requested a first floor room. They gave it to us. The room is nice. Quite similar to most chain hotels. It has a king bed with bed tables, an easy chair in one corner, a credenza with dresser and a writing desk with chair. It’s nicely large and quite well maintained. Two interesting notes: the bathroom light is motion detected and goes on when we walk into the bathroom; there’s a nightlight at the bottom of the clock. For a short stay, the room was good. There’s a small breakfast area off the lobby. Scattered here and there are a number of tables. And a high counter with stools. The usual fare – but more of it. Let’s see, sausage and bacon, biscuits & gravy, scrambled eggs and a mini omelet and the rest of the usual fare – OJ, coffee, yogurt. Typical.

In my opinion the neighborhood around this hotel is NOT sketchy, as some reviewers have stated. It’s a little industrial, quiet and pleasant with some fast food places and a sports bar/restaurant within a block or two, convenient with edible food if you get here late and are hungry. The parking lot appears safe and well lit and the hotel door is immediately unlocked by the friendly desk clerk who sees you coming from the parking lot. We felt completely safe here. Would have given this hotel 5 stars but the elevated wasn’t working and they don’t give any complimentary water and then charge a high price to buy it. The foghorns woke us up once but weren’t very loud and that’s not the hotel’s fault. Other than that the room was very clean and comfortable. Bed was pretty good and we slept well. The breakfast in the morning was fine, the usual hot and cold stuff. Good coffee and English muffin was best quality. Instant scrambled eggs were awful, but oh well, have a waffle instead! I’d stay here again.
