We changed the room (reason: inability to open the window, having to turn off the air conditioning - very noisy, no reading lamp - only very bright, sharp in the ceiling, long distance to the bathrooms). The new room after the change was quite OK: an additional night lamp, shelves for clothes, a table with drawers, proximity to the bathrooms. Unfortunately, just like in the previous room: window blocked, very noisy air conditioning. Fortunately, gaps in the window allowed fresh air to flow in from outside. Bathrooms close to our room, always available, always and often cleaned, always toilet paper, paper towels, soap. Fantastic location: close to Central Park, Broadway, 7-6-5 Avenue, Food Market, Breakfast bar, public transport (subway, bus).

“Great choice to keep prices down in NYC”

I stayed at the YMCA hostel for 4 nights with my partner. So, the location is great, it’s safe, close to the subway, Times Square, Central Park and plenty other things. The shared bathrooms were surprisingly really good, they were safe, very clean 24/7, and plenty of them to use so we never had to wait around for a shower. The rooms are not the best, the floors with dirty and didn’t look as if they’d been cleaned, but that being said the bedding was very clean and was changed while we were there. Beds were comfy enough, air conditioning was ok but it did get hot, at least it blocks out the noise as the walls aren’t too thick. Staff at reception did their jobs but really didn’t seem interested in being helpful at all. Building felt secure at night, locked front door, security in lobby etc. Overall, if you want to explore NYC and won’t be spending much time in your room other than sleeping, it’s right for you, I would definitely recommend this hostel. Also, all the guests were families, couples etc, no dodgy individuals like you might expect in a hostel, so don’t be put off!
