Stayed for 5 nights, found we had been upgraded as we were celebrating my 15 year old being signed up to a recording company, Adam on reception greeted us warmly and advised us of the upgrade, room was a lovely size with a kitchenette with 2 double beds, which were so comfortable and welcoming after long days of walking ( no view but we were barely in the room other than to sleep ) reception staff warm and friendly, can't do enough to help. Ideal location 10 mins to grand central station and around 20 mins walk to Times square, easy acsess to transport, there is a small food store just up the street to stock up on snacks for the room. All in all I will definitely return to the Shelburne Sonesta, hopefully get to use the rooftop area which was under construction whilst we were there. Thank you for making us feel welcome for our first ( not to be the last ) visit to your fabulous hotel and to NYC Debbie and Asher

A decent hotel with great staff in an easy midtown location. Decor is quite tired and elevators feel ancient, but the new restaurant next door is good and I slept well. Shout out to David Ortiz who found me a taxi in record time when I was running late for the airport!

The good news is the staff were all pleasant to work with. However there were some issues. At check-in, their computer system had been down all day so they were having to register manually, taking photocopies of credit cards, etc. the staff said it had been that way since about 6am, we arrived at 9pm. While inconvenient and took a long time to check in, the staff remained pleasant. Also 1 of the 2 customer elevators was not working for much of our 4 day stay (necessitating the use of a service elevator). For some reason, the “discounted rate” we received through the conference we were attending was $45/night more than the rate on their website. When I asked about this and requested that we be charged the posted rate instead, we were told they couldn’t make the change. To their credit, they did offer to upgrade our room from a one bed to a one bed apartment. The upgraded unit was spacious and pleasantly decorated but had a strong smoky smell that never went away. We left a note for morning housekeeping to leave extra sugar for morning coffee which they neglected to do. However, when I called that night to have some brought up they had someone to our door in 5 minutes! Overall a mixed experience. For the money we have stayed in nicer hotels in midtown but this wasn’t too bad.

Overall I would rate our stay at the Shelburne a 3.5. The location is perfect being just a few blocks to Grand Central and very walkable to Times Square yet the Murray Hill neighborhood is very quiet. The rooms are pretty big for NYC standards and the reason that we stayed at this hotel. We reserved 2 rooms, one for our adult kids that included a kitchenette and a standard king room for us. Both rooms were a nice size but the bathrooms were very small. And while both rooms were clean on the surface there were some parts that were filthy. I always buy disinfectant spray and wipes and I was glad to have them as there were spots on the doors, walls and toilet that needed a wipe down. There was also a covering of dust on the top of the headboard. The rooms just needed a deep clean. It would be nice if hotels took rooms offline to tackle things that housekeeping probably does not have time to notice like dirty walls and doors. We stayed in room 707 and the wood furniture is TIRED. Lots of gouges. Also, our refrigerator did not work the entire time that we were there but we were able to use the fridge in our kids room. The hotel gives you an option to pick 2 items per day per room from their grab and go. The selection totals maybe $5. While i appreciated the cold water or juice, i think the ‘resort fee’ could include a drink or light snack from the onsite restaurant as an option. The restaurant had excellent drinks. Being the hotel does not include any amenities, I am not sure the value of the ‘resort fee’. All interactions with staff were pleasant though not outstanding. Not much was shared about the hotel at check-in other than the snack options and the on-site restaurant. I would definitely consider staying again if I was traveling with family but if I was traveling as just a couple I would stay elsewhere.
