“Great hotel on a sketch street”

We stayed in 2 rooms during game 4 of the World Series. First off, the neighborhood is a disaster of sketchiness, homeless folks, drugged out folks and overall quite poverty-stricken HOWEVER this hotel is managing to keep all that out and is raising the bar for what to expect from other Bronx hotels. Check-in was smooth and easy and they gave us free NYY cupcakes which was a very nice touch. The beds and pillows were quite firm, which I'm a huge fan of. The rooms were overall very quiet from each other, however the hotel is down the street from a hospital and is on a busy street for police cars to go siren-blaring down. We got an unwelcome 4 am wakeup siren from some such police activity outside the hotel. And the hallways are unfortunately on the loud, echoey side too. Heard many folks returning from bars at 1-2 am in the hallways especially well but once they go in their rooms you can't hear neighboring rooms. So there's good quality here. The quality did NOT extend to the free breakfast unfortunately. The cereals were like 3rd rate, never heard of their brands and they tasted stale. They have no soy/almond/oat milk options (just half/half, whole or low fat, however their milk dispenser machine was quite low on supply and we only got a couple dribbles of milk). The coffee machine was a joke and seemed to be in dire need of replacement. Push the button to select your coffee type (black, espresso, latte, mocha, cappuccino, etc) about a dozen times and it finally works only to mess up and make something not right. I went through about 3 tries with 3 failed drinks (espresso wouldn't work, cappuccino would only give me frothed milk) before settling on black coffee which it spewed out a little bit of and then lots of hot water. The yogurt was low fat Yoplait. Overall, I wish I'd just gone across the street to Dunkin. The history of this hotel was everywhere, and was such a cool touch. You can clearly see you're not in some fake, megachain corporate hotel. You're in a historic building with cool history. Would have truly been something to see this Opera House in action back when the Bronx was a respectable neighborhood. They've done well overall and just need to do a little better with breakfast to have a truly remarkable hotel.

I’ve stayed at this hotel a few times over the years. And I’ve seen an improvement this visit compared to my last one in June 2024. The hotel, in general, is in a great location with easy access to food and the train, and you can find something late at night to eat for some reading. During my last few stays, I arrived late at night. I did stay in a room that has been upgraded, and I like the changes. Especially in the bathroom, but the smoke smelled on and off throughout the halls. Entry into the lobby area was sometimes too much, and just easy access to walk into the hotel for guests and nonguests. The late-night staff is always welcoming and helpful during my visits.
