Our first time having high tea in Texas was special. The Ashton Hotel goes all in with a variety of unexpected items and traditional items. Scones, egg salad, Croquettes, cheesecake, and many varieties of tea to choose from. Marcos and Anabel were our servers and were everything we hoped for. Informative, helpful and courteous. Don’t forget that the charge includes the valet service. Highly recommended, enjoy your tea.

“High Tea with friends.”

High tea was delightful. I am gluten free and they made such an effort for me. I felt at ease to enjoy the afternoon without fear of future pain. All the food was really tasty and the assortment of teas was lovely.

Perfectly located on Main Street Fort Worth, the Ashton is ideal for exploring the Fort Worth area. Two blocks from Sundance Square, 4 blocks from the train/bus station where $3 takes you into downtown Dallas. Lots of restaurants and eateries in the area. On entering the hotel, there is a small porch area, and the first thing that struck me was the overwhelming bad smell of drains. Obviously the hotel was aware of this as they had air freshener there, but it was a bit much for a first impression. The lobby itself is long and narrow, and the hotel is described as “boutique”, but I wouldn’t call it this. It was decorated with a mis match of different types of furniture and seemed a little tired and dark. The reception area was located at the end of the lobby, and we were checked in quickly and efficiently and directed to the elevator to our room. The elevator itself was old and tired, and we exited to a similar dark, tired looking hallway to our room. The carpet was originally some sort of blue colour but it was old and looked faded and tired. The first impression of our room was that it was dark, and we immediately switched on all the lamps. One of the bedside lamps didn’t work, and the dark grey/ brown carpet didn’t help. We reported the broken lamp twice but nothing happened, and every bit of light in the room was needed as it was so dark. I know it makes sense to use darker colours that don’t show damage or dirt, but the carpet here was not good, really tired looking and I couldn’t help but wonder how much dirt was ground into it. The room itself was clean though, but again the furniture did nothing to lift my mood. It seemed to consist of odd pieces, a wine colured small settee, dark brown cabinet consisting of a safe, fridge and microwave and lighter wooded table and bedside lockers. The bathroom was surprisingly large, but with a step up to the bath, which also contained the shower, and again, my pet hate…….. shower curtains. But I will say it was all very clean. The usual soap/shower gel etc was also provided. We had a coffee maker in our room, excellent you might think, but only 1 serving of coffee. Although we asked every day for coffee, I was eventually told they “didn’t have any”?? Now there is no on site restaurant or coffee shop. The website advised of a 24 hour “pantry” but this was only a small area off the lobby, consisting of a few drink options, a few crisp snacks and very little else. I counted 4 tubs of ice cream in the fridge that were still there when we left. There was no coffee facility, which is fine if you provide an option in the room, but as I said earlier they had “run out of coffee”. I did try to purchase some in the local shops but there was no capsule large enough for the machine in the room. There is a corner Bakery across the road, ideal for breakfast etc, but this closes early and when we returned from a long day out it was closed, and we would have loved to have a coffee before settling in for the night. On one of our nights, we had a fire alarm sound, at 3.30am. An automated message advised to leave the building immediately via the stairs, which we did. There was a horrific storm, lightening, rain etc going on outside, and we waited for the fire brigade to arrive. Two fire engines did arrive promptly and after about 30 minutes left the building. I asked one of them if everything was OK and they said yes, go back in. At NO stage did we encounter ANYONE from the hotel staff, no one to ensure people were leaving and no one to advise if was ok tor return, and to reassure guests. This is not acceptable. Yes it was 3.30 am but surely there is some security staff around? I completely understand these things happen, I have travelled extensively and this is not the first time this has happened. But the reassurance of someone on the hotel staff would have been appreciated. Next morning there was nothing from any of the staff, no explanation about the issue, again not really acceptable. All in all I was disappointed with the Ashton. I expected a boutique style, typical Texan hotel, and it didn’t live up to it. If not offering on site dining facilities, at least ensure there are adequate supplies in the rooms if providing a coffee machine, same with the On site “pantry”. And please lighten up the rooms, and sort out the smells
