“Drinks!! Way too expensibe”

Great hotel and staff! But……..the drinks were so expensive, we couldn’t believe it. Four martini’s were $92.00. A burger, hummus and 4 drinks. 135 dollars and that was with the $17 dollar credit from the hotel, not including tip. The girl next to us was complaining as well. 2 doubles cost her ... more

Great hotel and staff! But……..the drinks were so expensive, we couldn’t believe it. Four martini’s were $92.00. A burger, hummus and 4 drinks. 135 dollars and that was with the $17 dollar credit from the hotel, not including tip. The girl next to us was complaining as well. 2 doubles cost her 100 bucks!! The coffee is awful and especially at over 7 bucks! Go to Starbucks across the street.

“Wouldn’t choose again”

We did a quick Chicago trip and selected Talbots based on location. The hotel aesthetic are lovely - the cafe, the side entrance, lobby, etc. However, I am glad I redeemed my free Marriott night and didn’t pay full price. 1. Valet parking - $85 isn’t unheard of in Chicago but still. Very easy when we pulled up around dinner time on a Friday. Getting the car back was frightening when the system indicated the car couldn’t be found. It could-system down. Phew. 2. Many missed opportunities for getting things right. You can check in on the app but it doesn’t matter because you can’t actually get a digital key. The lobby is tiny. So waiting to check in after you’ve already done that is annoying. The phones in the room were impossible to figure out or didn’t work. So trying to call in advance to get our car only to not have the phone work and then hear the car is not found…not good. 3. The beds are so hard! I like a firm mattress but this bed hurt. The room was way too warm regardless of what we did to turn air down. The sound from the hallway was hardly muffled. So I got 5 hours sleep. 4. The room was large, which is nice. The linens were Marriott quality, nice. The bathroom was dark and my daughter didn’t want to go in it. I could hear other toilets flushing all night. There are a few places to plug in phones but not enough and there are very few, hard to find wall outlets. 5. The drinks are $$$$. We had a $25 food/beverage credit. I paid $21 plus tip for one martini! And it was not good. As in I didn’t finish it. 6. The staff was nice and professional. Probably best part of this hotel. Overall, I was disappointed. Lots of “almost” good execution but not enough for me to stay again.

“Not bad but not great”

I've stayed here when it was part of the Hyatt chain and recently decided to try it again recently. Its now part of Marriott. It really was a mixed bag. Check in was great. Quick and efficient. Great job there. Our room was a handicap room, which was not what we booked. The plusses were that the room was spacious. The negatives were that the bathroom, while large, had no counter space, no storage, no room around the sink, and no towel racks. Towels were just hung on the grab bars located throughout the bathroom. Maybe because it was a handicap room, but the shades and curtains were controlled electronically by panels on the wall near the bed -- good in theory but they didnt work. I called and texted over the course of my stay and the did send someone but the curtains and one window shade was never fixed . Being able to open and close window shades is a basic amenity of a hotel room. While I didnt mention it to the front desk, the hot water is not really hot. I like a hot shower and it was warm -- fine but not as hot as my liking. And the same at the sink which was luke warm at it hottest. Again, I didnt complain as it was passable, so I dont know if it was just my room, a temporary problem, or that's the way it is. Our room faced Delaware Pl which is not really a main road but has its share of street noise, so it you are sensitive to that, beware. On the plus side we didnt hear any other noise from either the hallway or neighbors - very quiet on that front. The elevators are a bit clunky, small and slow. Especially since 1 of the 2 were out of order for a part of our stay making the wait long. The lobby is small but adequate and having the restaurant (which we didnt try) up front with a sidewalk cafe gives the hotel a quaint almost European feel. On the plus side, housekeeping came daily and did a fantastic job. Overall no complaints about cleanliness -- a nice clean property!

Our experience at the Talbot was primarily underwhelming. The front desk person during our check in was exuding 'no....whatever you are going to ask....the answer is no'. The rooms were dark and looking directly into an adjacent brick wall. When asked if we could have a room with a view, the front desk person provided us with the clear bit of information that the hotel is shaped like a 'T' and that's what you get with a 'T' shaped hotel. The elevator was a dicey prospect as it was being used by contractors who were updating some carpeting on some of the floors between our floor and lobby. This might have been good information for someone at the front desk to share. The location is the saving grace of the hotel...and the fact that it is perfectly adequate...but not special.
