Having stayed at the Hilton O'Hare on various previous occasions, I was aware of the hotel's reputation for customer indifference and high prices. However, this time (June 7), the reception staff were quite welcoming and helpful -- a pleasant surprise. The hotel has a new fitness center, replacing the old one that was the basement. The new one is on the second level, open 24 hours and very well equipped for a hotel fitness center. (It is unstaffed, and has no pool or locker room like they had downstairs). Otherwise the hotel is very convenient (connected by underground walkways to the domestic terminals), functional and quiet. However, the hotel could use a renovation. The decor would rate as excellent for the 1980s, but that era is long gone.

It’s convenient, that’s for certain - it’s in walking distance, just across three lanes outside terminal two and you’re there. Couldn’t quite figure out how to find the actual crosswalk to get there but at that point we were quite done with the airport after getting bumped from our flight and ready to sidle up for a good meal and a glass of vino. So you walk in and it feels as though it’s just an extension of the airport and all the airport people you saw all day are there. The carpets feel dated and dingy and the lobby goes on and on with airport like partitions to check in. The restaurant: The burger felt substantial with real angus beef but the fries? They’re fine if you don’t care if they are mushy and not crispy. Let’s just say I’m not going to write home about them. The Sports Edition Bar was open until midnight and they had Pinot Grigio from Italy so that was a bonus. There were lots of TV’s so if you’re a sports fan that’s a good thing. The restaurant was filled with middle aged men so I was glad to have run into my fellow stranded best friend’s daughter so I could be her protector, not that we felt unsafe … but neither one of us would have felt comfortable to go in there ourselves. The hallways? Everything is a pale mustard yellow; the hallways to the room on the third floor, the walls, the carpet, the tile in the bathroom, and it all feels outdated, especially the rise in the carpet when walking down the hallway. My take? Don’t be lazy. Go somewhere else for $100 less. You’re paying for convenience, and even though I have to get up at 5 a.m. I’d rather take a shuttle from a more charming atmosphere. If you have the answer as to where I’m all ears.. The rooms? more mustard, and a strong smell of a chorine or bleach type of disinfectant, couldn’t quite place it. But the beds and pillows are comfy with nice comforters and the room is spacious. The view of the parking garage is awesome.
