If you are visiting Uruguay for more than a couple of days i definitely recommend San Pedro de Timote. Only 2 hours away from Montevideo, super easy to get to. The whole family will enjoy not only the place, but the friendly people that works in there the Manager Alejandro, the receptionist Marina, Beto, super kind! The food delicious, the horseback riding are awesome, fishing, walks through fantastic landscaping! Amazing. Your kids will love it and it’s worth going with friends!

A difficult one to give a rating as it is an extraordinary place and worth staying a night for the experience! An historic estancia in a rural location, comprised of several white washed, red tiled buildings with beautiful tile work around the entrance, a chapel, ancient olive trees, public rooms furnished with old furniture, artefacts and old photos. From the outside it looks like it has been lifted from old Spain. We stayed a night to break the journey across Uruguay. Our ground floor room was dark and very shabby. Dinner was a buffet and not very appetising but the beef from the asado was unexpectedly excellent! Good choice of wines too. Dinner didn’t start till 8.30. There was only one other couple in the dining room, otherwise it was big tables of groups.

“Relaxation”

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of an Exodus Tour of South America. The ranch has a rustic charm about it. Yes, it could do with a bit of work--tiling, plastering, painting. But it all adds to the authenticity of the place. The books in the massive library look like some of them haven't been touched for decades. The church has birds living in it. We were there on a full board basis--good thing, as it is miles from anywhere. The food was delicious, with a choice of 3 different main courses. Service was excellent too. There was breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and evening meal. We went horseback riding in the morning and afternoon. The morning ride was a slow amble which was perfect for me as a novice rider. The afternoon was a faster and hillier and was an adventure! The head gaucho, Bacu, was fantastic despite having no English and me having no Spanish. There were other activities available, swimming being one of them but the indoor pool had a weird bubbly skin on it, and the outdoor pool next to it was green. There was a games room with table tennis, table football, pool and other games to play. But the main attraction was the views and the listening to the squawking parakeets and peacocks. A great getaway from it all.
