“Second time around”

Second time around. Second stay here, and it really didn’t disappoint again. Great food, great swim, seriously great massage. And overall just a lovely stay, in a very quiet comfortable room, huge bed. Nicely managed throughout our stay.

I will start off on a positive, it’s a lovely hotel and the staff were on the whole great too. We had however booked the hotel to enjoy a quiet relaxing spa break for some much needed pre Christmas rest and relaxation. Unfortunately we were allocated a bedroom above the main party function room and adjacent the kitchen garden where the party guests seemed to congregate loudly for a smoke / vape. We were eventually moved to a quieter room in the stables but the room was smaller than the one we had paid for. We have since reached out to the hotel and had no response about our stay, which is disappointing. The hotel is lovely but if you are considering booking I would suggest confirming whether there is a function on at the hotel and if there is, either book into a room in the former stables, or book elsewhere.

The hotel is located close to busy A48 and at the end of the short drive. There is a large car park near the front. The venue has been extended and modernised quite considerably thus losing some of its original charm. Internally, only the bar, some rooms and the library areas have retained the interesting original features of the manor. As different structures were bolted on to the main house over the years, the place is full of stairs and hazardous steps. There is a large indoor swimming pool and good spa facilities, at an additional charge. Upon entering the manor the reception is on the right. We were checked in quite swiftly and efficiently. To access our room on second floor we had to carry our luggage up the spiral staircase, with no assistance offered, and then trundle along the soulless, bland corridors. Our Superior room was very spacious and bright with a huge double bed. The furniture was quite contemporary and basic, with wardrobe doors rather haphazardly set too close to the entrance door. The large TV had a good selection of programmes. There was a kettle and selection of the relevant accoutrements. There was a safe but not in working order. WiFi signal was rather patchy. The bathroom was spacious and airy, with a large bathtub and easy to operate faucets. There were dispensers rather than individual accessories. Bathrobes were provided, slippers on demand only. We dined at the restaurant. The food was above standard, wine list limited but more than adequate. Service was rather sloppy and although the staff were friendly and helpful they really need to operate at a more sophisticated and efficient level. Breakfast was quite good, with a wide selection of fruit. Service, in keeping with the general theme of the restaurant, was slack. Overall, nothing to shout about. The place lacked atmosphere and that cosiness one associates with old houses; the staff even failed to keep the fire in the bar alight, which would have helped a little.
