I was down in Birmingham for a work event and got to enjoy the luxury that is Crowne Plaza! LOCATION It’s a less than 10 minute walk from New Street station, and just over 5 to the library. In other words, very central. ROOM Spacious, comfortable and clean- with TWO lush double beds and an ensuite. FACILITIES First and foremost, the shower was great. Since this was only an overnighter I didn’t experience much else, but the room offered air con, a decent-sized television and quality tea/coffee facilities. FINAL COMMENTS An immense breakfast offering catered to pretty much everybody. I wish I could afford Crowne Plaza on my regular city breaks…

Check-in was exemplary by Sid – my IHG status was recognised and I was upgraded to a refurbished room on the 10th floor. The public areas have been refurbished and look quite modern. The refurbished corridor was quite smart, but still a bit gloomy and there were unfinished bits, including one of the lifts being out of service. The hotel was extremely quiet, though, so this wasn’t an issue. The room itself was looking good – what you’d expect a modern Crowne Plaza room to look like. Virtually everything in the room itself was new, except for the older windows which are not amazing for soundproofing the noise from the outside. They also haven’t been cleaned in quite some time from the outside. The bed was very comfortable, the HVAC system worked well and the finishes were of a good quality There were plenty of sockets (including USB A and C) and individual lights. The bathroom was a bit older, with mould in the shower cubicle. The sink tap was quite old and brought down the overall quality of the bathroom, alongside the chipped floor tiles. It’s questionable whether these sorts of savings are worth it if you’re aiming for a brand new feel for a hotel. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was on the disappointing side – the choice was pretty unhealthy overall and the burger I ended up getting was of limited quality. The chips that came with it were extremely salty. Breakfast was good quality and extensive, although the poor quality juice machine was a let-down. I thought the restaurant was also rather dark for the time of day. Overall a decent stay, but not a hotel I could get excited about.

“Good food & staff. Dated rooms.”

The rooms are very tired and dated. Lack of charging points for our family tech. The air conditioning sounded like the spin cycle on a washing machine. Beds were hard as were the pillows. The rooms are very tired and dated. Lack of charging points for our family tech. The air conditioning sounded like the spin cycle on a washing machine. Beds were hard as were the pillows. That said, breakfast was good and we ate both nights in the bar/restaurant and enjoyed our food. Staff were pleasant too. Might return once bedrooms are refurbished.
