“Beautiful setting and lovely room”

This is a lovely hotel in a beautiful setting in the north of Scotland. We want to particularly commend Evan, who sorted out a problem with our original room which was too hot. This is a lovely hotel in a beautiful setting in the north of Scotland. We want to particularly commend Evan, who sorted out a problem with our original room which was too hot. We were moved to a fantastic room by the waterfall. Dinner was also excellent, although a little pricey. A tip for anyone travelling the NC500; you need to book dinner somewhere as there is nowhere else in walking distance

“Quaint hotel with intimate feel, but pricey food”

A quaint hotel which plays up to the Scottish fishing lodge stereotype, this was a nice place to spend a night. The room had traditional decoration and was spacious, as was the bathroom. A quaint hotel which plays up to the Scottish fishing lodge stereotype, this was a nice place to spend a night. The room had traditional decoration and was spacious, as was the bathroom. Very clean, and we had a good nights sleep too. Staff were lovely and the service felt personalised and friendly. The restaurant however has a staid feeling to it (with bizarre music choice, played too loudly) and although the cuisine was good, it is very overpriced compared to similar establishments. Two 3-course meals and a bottle of wine plus 12.5% discretionary tip easily gets you to £200.

The location and rooms are a delight! The service and restaurant not. Let me phrase it again. The price is too much, 300 pounds for 2 tasting menus with a lousy wine pairing. The service was bad, no request was met and no communication. No explanation about the courses, even the appetizer was too... more

The location and rooms are a delight! The service and restaurant not. Let me phrase it again. The price is too much, 300 pounds for 2 tasting menus with a lousy wine pairing. The service was bad, no request was met and no communication. No explanation about the courses, even the appetizer was too difficult. A cheese ball with a sherry tomato and balsamic vinegar. The wines were pre poured and kept chill in the fridge. No nose, no explanation and even different wines from the menu. It was a total let down for that money. I will come again for the room and view, but i will make reservation to eat somewhere else

A classic example of how an otherwise excellent establishment can be badly let down by poor recruitment, training and supervision of customer-facing staff. This is in most respects a very good hotel (if slightly overpriced by fair comparison). The buildings are attractive, the rooms, decor and furnishings are all nice quality, all is clean and well-presented, and the general atmosphere is appropriately quiet and traditional. The restaurant is also pretty spot on - as expected for two AA rosettes, with an interesting menu, all dishes well prepared and presented, and the ambience is quiet and elegant. BUT..... The standard, training, manner, dress and deportment of the front of house staff is just totally inappropriate and inadequate for the level at which this hotel is aiming (and charging). This applies to both reception and restaurant. The individual staff members do try their best within their limitations, but recruitment of correct calibre individuals, the training, and the supervision here is a serious and short-sighted failure of management which has an immediately detrimental effect on customer perception and overall guest experience. The only other misgivings are the rather scruffy and unkempt appearance of the grounds through which guests must walk between buildings. So overall a very good hotel, with restaurant to match, that is sadly let down by things that could easily be rectified.
