Having read some of the online chat and reviews about The Grand, I had lowish expectation for my five day break, booked by my friend. The truth is, do not believe all you read online. We both had a great time here. A recent refurb of all the huge public areas has given this magnificent Victorian hotel some of its sparkle back. The huge proportions of this 1867 building hark back to a lost era of luxury and upper class holidaying. In its hayday, it employed over 150 staff, today it is managed and serviced by a fraction of that number, but to great effect. Everything was very clean, bountiful, better than average buffet dinner and breakfast. We even had an excellent Christmas Dinner, complete with crackers, party hats and music. Thanks must got to Richard who manages the huge dinning room, his wife Claire and the loyal long term catering and serving staff. These people work hard to create a better than good experience at a budget end of the market. The quality of food and service was a credit to them all. I had a single room, no view to speak of, but it was both warm and clean. Water and shower boiling, fresh towels and a tea/coffee /milk refresh easily sought from reception. No need for a daily clean, but this can be provided on request. Bed was a single, but comfy. Great big tv and plenty of wardrobe hanging. We had a 2 for 1 drnks package, which did stretch the bar service, but again the hard working staff were polite and friendly. Lots of comfortable sitting space. Tea and coffee included in the evenings free of charge and a decent entertainment package including bingo, live acts and films. Abba night was fab!!! The hotel is proud of its 167 year heritage. I wish it another 167 years. Much better experience than I had been expecting. You will never know, unless you go!!! Great area to explore. Whitby and York equally brilliant and in easy reach. We would both return.

A mixed bag but I’m leaving a review for a party of 5 but scoring it on my own experience and room not the others in my party we arrived from a coach trip and were the last to check in but the wait wasn’t too bad at all.the public area was beautiful and decorated for Christmas,we received directions to our 3 rooms ….we were on 3 different floors and the floor 6 room proved difficult to find. My room ( floor 3 ) was adequate,the sea view would have been amazing if only we could have seen out of the window but it was filthy,inside and out the outside obviously has all the elements thrown at it but a clean now n again wouldn’t go amiss. Bed was comfy and I had a canny sleep apart from every floorboard creaked when one of us headed to the toilet during the night.the bathroom….well it definitely needs looking at,the shower kinda had a mind of its own and flooded the floor ( as did several others after chatting to folk on the coach ) peeling paint,grubby and could do with a spray of mildew remover. My aunts were the “lucky” ones to end up on floor 6 their room had a window facing into a wall with a faded old blue croc on the concrete outside ( yes the footwear not the reptile ) on this wall was a light that shone into the room as the curtains didn’t fit properly so they didn’t have a good sleep,their bathroom had a spa bath with a shower above it and they chose not to use them at all…which says it all. The bar beside the restaurant had a nice pleasant girl working in it,she poured our gin….and yes we were the people who had the huge dead spider in the ice….traumatised lol…I’m laughing now but I bl00dy hate spiders and im quite phobic about them so it’s a good job it was my sisters drink and not mine and I do know these things can and do happen and it’s no one’s fault. The evening meal was actually much much better than the reviews suggested,plenty of it and crucially it was hot as many buffet style food is not. the staff in the dining room were working their socks off but always with a smile and a nod. The room where the entertainment was was extremely busy and we couldn’t get a seat so we just sat in the lounge area enjoying a few more gins and a bit of gossip amongst the 5 of us,the bar staff there were very very busy but coped well and were always polite and professional.your lady security staff was most patient with some children who spent the evening running around and throwing baubles while their parents/guardians were enjoying the entertainment and leaving them to it in the lounge. Breakfast was actually very good with tasty sausages which is also a rarity,I didn’t have toast as I really can’t be bothered to stand and queue for it at those darned machines so maybe a few croissants or pain au chocolat would help. Overall for what we paid it was fine,I actually arrived with very low expectations but left quite happy ( I’m still thinking about that spider though ) I’ve marked this as very good mainly because of the staff,the food and the public areas ,drinks were for a hotel reasonably priced,had I been allocated the room my aunts had the score would have been much lower. I’m not expecting a personal reply as your management seem to have a standard reply whatever the review says which is a shame as it suggests the reviews are not actually read properly. Would I stay again ? Yes I probably would as it’s in a perfect location and has I believe had some renovation work done on it and I presume more to come in the future. Come on management and make The Grand …grand again,let it live up to its name.
