Staff are so welcoming and friendly. Hotel has a very relaxing yet grand feel about it. The decor is a little tired but I knew that as we've stayed before. And the mattress definitely had seen better days as it sunk in the middle. The car park was closed (which we found out after arrival) but a quick phonecall to reception and they suggested nearby parking with a great discount code. Even though the hotel is on a busy road, the secondary glazing meant the noise levels didn't disturb us. And a very good fan in the room did a great job of keeping us cool as the weather meant unusual hot temperatures. Shower pressure was excellent and room was clean. This was the first time we'd had breakfast as part of our stay. On the first morning the breakfast was good and service was excellent. Felt very relaxed. However on the 2nd morning the cooked breakfast was inedible. There were no meat sausages and the hash browns were just batter and no filling. It was the morning after a big gig at the stadium so it may be that the kitchen couldn't cope with a full hotel but nevertheless I was really disappointed as I felt it let the hotel down. All in all, a great central location with superb staff. If you want to stay somewhere that is not a generic chain hotel, yet still affordable, this place is ideal.

It’s true this hotel is in need of renovation. The main areas look great but the corridors and rooms tell a different story. However, it’s not terrible and I have definitely stayed in worse. We stayed here as part of a murder mystery package and really enjoyed the event. Dinner was a three course meal and was perfectly edible if not exciting. Breakfast the next morning was truly awful with rubber eggs, hard black pudding and hash browns which appeared to have no potato centre. The staff were all really lovely but one or two appeared a little inept particularly in reception where they insisted we didn’t have a booking until someone helped them to find it and also at breakfast where they told us it wasn’t included until another came along and sorted that out. The room was fairly clean although the bathroom wasn’t as clean as I would expect. The bed however was the most comfortable hotel bed I’ve slept in and although other reviews have mentioned the noise from outside, I didn’t notice it even with the window open. So a mixed bag really. It was a nice break and I really enjoyed the murder mystery event but wouldn’t choose to stay in this hotel again.

What was once, I've no doubt, a very classy up market hotel, is now a very tired old building very much needing a refurb. Mattresses are poor (they sink in the middle). Staff very friendly and helpful. Brilliantly located for shops and gig venues. What was once, I've no doubt, a very classy up market hotel, is now a very tired old building very much needing a refurb. Mattresses are poor (they sink in the middle). Rooms showing signs of damp, rattling windows. Shower curtains poor. Won't be staying again until the building has had the maintenance carried out that is so badly needed. Such a shame.
