At a glance, the hotel looks a little dated. But once inside it seems to have been updated somewhat recently (fresh paint, new beds). The rooms are very clean (though a bit crowded with some large chairs) and the beds are very comfortable. It’s a great location, very close to the train station and within walking distance of all the sites, including the The Hoe and Barbican areas. I would definitely stay here again if I were in Plymouth.

4 is ‘very good’ which it wasn’t hence 3. The main common areas have been modernised in a nice way so thumbs up for that. Service good. Breakfast was good. Value not bad. I would suggest going for club room. Not sure you get a better room but breakfast is included, there is water and coke in the fridge and you get a drink at the bar. Rooms has not been modernised. They were clean but dated and with mismatched furniture. Bed std double so small. Towel rail hanging off wall. Used linen left outside our room overnight. Lift interior looked the same as it was in 1994 when I stayed there for graduation. If you can get a good deal then stay otherwise consider what else there is in the centre. Premier inns on the Barbican are good. Lastly we arrived 1335 for 1400 Check-in. Told, politely, to come back at 1400. Receptionist did not even check if room was ready.

We booked the Copthorne Plymouth for 5 nights. I chose this hotel due to having suitable disabled access. We booked the Copthorne Plymouth for 5 nights. I chose this hotel due to having suitable disabled access. The front (main entrance) entrance isn’t accessible not even for guests with heavy luggage, as there are 3 sets of stairs from street level to reception. The accessible entrance is at the back of the hotel, it is accessible but not currently an entrance that would impress you on arrival as it’s situated on an alleyway which of a evening makes you feel a little unsafe, I know this isn’t necessarily the hotels fault but it doesn’t give a good first impression. Once into the reception area the staff are very pleasant. On arrival to the room it felt very dated, furniture chipped and marked, the carpet has numerous stains on it. The bathrooms are dated, the toilet wouldn’t flush after the first usage, we reported it straight away and an engineer got it working again. Later on we were faced with the same issue and the receptionist attempted to sort the issue but as expected he was unable to fix it, we were then offered another room. Yay the too worked in this one. Why didn’t the room cleaner report the initial fault as the flush handle was loose from the get go. The hotel rooms, corridors, carpets and lifts are so dusty and stained they need a deep clean and redecoration. I wouldn’t rate the hotel as a 4 star. More of a 3 star with 4 star room rates. Couldn’t fault the breakfast service it was well organised and stocked up. Shame the rest of the hotel doesn’t live up to 4 star expectations.
