We booked to stay here for 2 nights over new year. Having previously stayed at Celtic Manor, the fact that coldra court is part of their ‘collection’ was a major factor when booking only a couple of days in advance of our stay. We weren’t expecting the grandeur of Celtic manor BUT we did expect a certain level which this hotel sadly lacks. Firstly, having made our accommodation reservation, we had wanted to speak to someone directly about making a New Year’s Eve dinner reservation. However, we were repeatedly unable to get through to anyone over the phone despite several attempts. Eventually, we did manage to speak to someone the day before, by which time, the evening was not surprisingly sold out. We managed to get a booking at the Ty Newport nextdoor, this was done via staff at Coldra Court but turned out to be very complicated and there was no record of our booking, despite me having paid in full. Service like this isn’t expected from a 4 star establishment. We arrived at 2pm and our room was ready which was great. The reception area is clean and welcoming but the other guests had a complete disregard for anyone outside of their party. They were vaping by the pool, adults shouting down the corridors, there was a suspicious “smoky” smell down the corridor one evening and as for the children. There is a time and place for running around, shouting and squealing, the hotel bar is not the place! We were going to have a drink in the bar on NYE before going nextdoor but on walking through the reception area, it was already carnage (7pm) so we decided to head straight out and we were a little apprehensive at what we might find on our return in the early hours. It was still chaos and a very different feel to the atmosphere at Ty Newport. Hard to describe but it felt a bit edgy. Breakfast was ok, not awful but not great either, certainly not 4 star standard and the same for the room too. We went out on New Year’s Day and on returning to the hotel at around 8pm, we thought we’d sit in the bar for a couple of drinks. However, sadly, the other guests put us off, we couldn’t tolerate their children running around us (while their own parents sat, seemingly oblivious) and returned to our room. I’m astounded that the Celtic manor collection would be happy to be associated with a hotel that allows guests to behave in this way, I know in the main resort, this would not be allowed to happen. Bars are adult areas, it’s a privilege and not a right for children to be there. Something our own children are fully aware of. Interestingly, during our visit to Ty Newport and conversations with people who live locally, it seems Coldra Court is getting a bit of a reputation for this and have since stopped visiting for exactly the same reasons as stated. It has the potential to be a pleasant hotel but safly sounds like it’s heading in quite the opposite direction.
