We have stayed at Lindeth Howe several times. As on previous visits had a thoroughly enjoyable long weekend. Good food and wine. Friendly and pleasant staff. Warm and comfortable room with garden view. Despite the snow, torrential rain and flooding due to Storm Bert on the Saturday we were still able to join our included Mountain Goat 10 Lakes Tour on the Sunday. This was superb and hightly recommended.

“Lovely stay”

Lovely hotel. Very comfortable stay for a night away - staff friendly and accommodating. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel and great food on each occasion. Lovely bar area and decorations around the hotel. Good location, short drive to windemere.

Booked in for a three nights autumn special deal but curtailed our stay after the first night’s experience. First the pluses: an elegant hotel set in beautiful gardens close to Windermere; clean and comfortable bedroom and an enjoyable breakfast and finally, the reception staff , the young woman serving in the restaurant and the Guest Services Manager were unfailingly friendly, welcoming, courteous and professional. After that, it went down hill in every respect and very quickly. Having checked in, we were invited to relax in the lounge/bar area to order our complimentary cream tea. We were informed, abruptly and rudely, by the duty restaurant manager that we weren’t on his list. We advised otherwise but he wasn’t having it. We persisted and urged him to check with his colleagues on reception. He was shown to be wrong but couldn’t bring himself to apologise. The cream tea was scrumptious. Later in the evening, we ordered pre dinner drinks from a younger barman who never smiled or engaged in any way. We were shown a dinner menu by a pleasant young woman who took our food order, but no wine list. Having requested a wine list (as did another couple who were waiting to dine), no one bothered to take our order. The duty restaurant manager then approached us with the words:”your starters are ready “, leaving us to make our own way to the restaurant and taking our pre-dinner drinks with us. We proceeded to order a bottle of wine which was placed unopened on the table. One starter (a baked sardine etc) was the smallest portion possible, arrived stone cold with half the listed aaccompaniments missing. It was replaced with neither apology nor comment. At least the replacement was warm! Both main courses looked attractive and appetising but, again, were served barely warm and on cold plates. What kind of “professional “ chef/kitchen allows obviously cold food on unwarmed plates to leave the kitchen. Four other couples in our vicinity complained similarly, with one of them describing some of the menu choices as a posh, but expensive version of Wetherspoons! More worryingly for the hotel’s owners and management, two of these couples voiced their displeasure at the obvious fall in standards when compared with previous visits. The only time the restaurant manager and bartender smiled was when closing the restaurant/bar at 9.00pm. The Guest Services Manager dealt with my complaint, sensitively, professionally and generously. We were left believing that something is seriously amiss in a four star hotel with such a pedigree, when customer reviews vary so widely and worryingly. We were also disappointed that the hotel’s general manager chose not to make any contact with us as we’d been led to believe would happen. Don’t know if the owners bother to read customers’ comments. If not, then perhaps now is a good time to start while you still have a business.
