“Worth a visit just for the location and food.”

The location and views were exceptional. Staff were very accommodating and helpful (apart from one) and went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. The icing on the cake was the food! We could not fault it. It is worth staying for the food alone.

The food is sublime, and the kitchen can accommodate special dietary requirements given a bit of notice. Pictures of a wonderful afternoon tea, terrific value. We had a really enjoyable stay this week. The gardens are beautiful and well kept. Some of the rooms are slightly dated but this doesn’t stop it from feeling luxurious. Our room was really big, very clean and had everything we needed. We had booked our dog in and she was made very welcome by all staff. The food was delicious including the vegan breakfast which was tasty and imaginative. We will definitely stay here again.

The following comments are based purely on our expectations for the level of tariffs and charges paid. GOOD: - The attractive and stately building immediately gives an impression of quality. - Location is lovely, right on the loch, and within extensive, well kept grounds. - The restaurant really is very good, with an interesting menu of well-conceived, well-prepared, and well-presented dishes. - Prices in the restaurant are high-ish, but are justified by the level of quality and service. - Service is really excellent throughout the hotel and restaurant. All staff are well trained, helpful and friendly without excess informality. Top marks to management for such careful recruitment and training. NOT SO GOOD: - The overall impression of the interior is of tiredness, which is possibly a little unfair as some areas have obviously been refurbished, but others have not, and need it. - Our supposedly "superior" room was really very small, with barely space enough for two suitcases. To be fair on checking afterw we found the size was stated on their website, and maybe a seasoned traveler or mathematician might be able to visualize this. For us mere mortals this just translates as small, and was a real surprise and disappointment. - The bathroom is poorly decorated, with a lino floor, and just feels a bit cheap. - Two of the four windows are painted shut, and the sash cords/weights on the other two don't work so they need to be propped open with the waste bin and a lump of wood (see photo). - The rather shabby, poor quality furniture and cheap fittings are all just not up to what one might expect at an up market hotel for £400. - And one very minor point - this is the first time ever, in all our world travels, that we have been asked to pay for our room on arrival. Maybe we looked like we might do a runner? All in all we were disappointed. The previous night we spent 25% more at a vastly more prestigious hotel, but for that 25% they really did offer at least 100% better quality all round (apart from the restaurant). The Bunchrew seems to be charging aspirational prices but is just failing to deliver an aspirational experience. At a lower room tariff we would have felt far happier to accept these shortcomings, but the level of charges will obviously dictate the level of expectations. This was our second stay here, and I'm genuinely sorry to say it will probably not be repeated.
