“Restaurant”

While walking around the locks area, we needed to use the restrooms so we walked in here. We were told restrooms were only for customers, so we purchased a skone. Staff was friendly and welcoming. Skone was fresh and tasted good. Lots of seating area in the restaurant with a nice view of the locks.

Lovely hotel was lovely with Amazing surrounding views. The lady behind reception was so kind and helpfull to my mum when she was unwell. Self check in point if reception closed. The room was large with lovely beds. Left feeling well rested and ready for a long trip home.

When we checked in there was no one on reception to help or welcome us. This had to be done ‘remotely’ on a machine as was check out the next morning. When we checked in there was no one on reception to help or welcome us. This had to be done ‘remotely’ on a machine as was check out the next morning. At £187.50 the room was a bit pricey but included a very good ‘full Scottish breakfast’ for two people. We enjoyed an excellent night’s sleep as the hotel is a couple of miles from the town centre in a quiet location next to the Caledonian lock. There were a lot of no vacancies signs outside many B&b’s and guest houses so I guess the Moorings Hotel can pretty much charge what they like. Overall I would still recommend this hotel and stay there again on a future visit but I don’t think it warrants its 4 star rating when there is no one to give a personal welcome.

“Disappointing”

We had booked this hotel a while a go as it was in a good location to drive to Ben Nevis. We were staying for 3 nights. There was nobody around when we arrived so we started to use the self check-in machine, a slight blip so we went looking for a member of staff. Check-in sorted. Settled into the room, there was an espresso coffee machine, very nice, but no coffee pods only sachets of instant coffee. The windows only opened a couple of inches and if you wanted to close them altogether you couldn't, Our friends said the same in their room. About mid/late afternoon we went down to the bar, asked for a couple of cappuccinos and was told they don't service them at this time. Ok... we settled for a wine and a beer. The wine was a bottle that you normally get in a hotel mini bar, don't normally get that at a hotel bar but perhaps it's more convenient for them. We asked if we could put these on to our room, and was told they don't have a system for that, unusual, but we can pay as we go. The website photos are somewhat misleading, along with the room details, as we were only staying 3 nights we had brought limited luggage and the room details said toiletries provided, that's handy I wouldn't have to pack travel size ones. They had shower gel and hand wash attached to the wall, but no shampoo, certainly nothing like the web photo suggested, when asked we were told that you only get those if you are in an executive room, guess that told us.. we did have to smile, we were in a superior room, one below executive. Again website misleading, We had dinner that was ok. Breakfast you have the choice of continental or cooked. So we ordered and we waited thought they must be busy, then the waitress said sorry for the delay the ticket hadn't gone through to the kitchen, the system hadn't worked..... looks like they have problems with their systems.. On the breakfast menu you can have coffee, which you can help yourself to, but if you want latte or cappuccino that was £2.00 extra, well that was a first never been anywhere that charged you extra, especially these days, very strange. The staff in general seemed to be very lacklustre, if there was more than a couple of people at the bar the staff member seemed to get flustered, our friend asked for a coffee and they said we don't do that at the bar I'll have to get someone to get it, which is fine, but it was a slow process. Whilst we were sitting in the bar, a lady had just checked in as part of a group and was asking for towels for the room, surely it can't be that difficult to get a room ready. The second night we arrived for dinner, and was asked if we had booked, which we had done when we made the initial reservation. The last night we drove into Glen Coe. The final morning we got down to breakfast a few minutes before 7.30 (start of breakfast) as we were driving back to Glasgow Airport, and was told it will be 10 minutes before we start cooking, that's fine we said can we just go and sit at a table, we didn't all want cooked anyway. I don't know if this establishment is now under new management and they are finding their feet, or whether the location is such that they don't expect repeat guests. A shame with some tweaking it could be a nice place. It appeared that it was mainly tourists who use them, not many locals. ????
