“A reasonable hotel with good aspects.”

Stayed here 21-24 June We had arrived on the overnight Caledonian Sleeper and were able to leave our bags in reception area whilst we did a bit of exploring. We had hope to be able to get into our room early but had to wait until 3pm. The room was comfortable and a reasonable size. The shower section of the mixer tap was fixed solid but having reported it to reception, it was repaired before we finished an evening meal that day. Tea making facilities included full fat milk rather than the usual semi-skimmed milk – not quite what we would have expected these days. The room TV had a connection to the roof ariel for normal terrestrial but was only able to use on-line services so watching live TV was a bit of a problem. We did report it but apparently it is a common problem to all rooms on the 4th floor! There is only one lift in this hotel and there are 4 floors so anyone on 3rd or 4th floors need to use it. BUT, whilst it is “licensed” to carry 4 passengers, at the time of our visit, it was restricted to 1 passenger only due to potential breakdowns resulting from, so we were told, problems with the weight mechanism. It was supposed to be repaired over the weekend we were there but was still restricted when we left on Monday morning. We were on a Bed & Breakfast stay and the food for breakfast was very acceptable. Plenty of choice and I even had Haggis for the first time – tastes something like lambs liver mashed up! There are plenty of eating places along the main shopping street – we ended up in The Great Glen. However, the “service” on Saturday morning was very poor – three “A” level aged children on duty with no supervision and no idea of how to organize themselves. At one point there were 11 tables waiting to be cleared (breakfasters had departed) and all they could do was keep looking at their paperwork! Sunday was a bit better with slightly more mature personnel and Monday was the best with at least 5 staff on (including a young lad from Kent!) On the Saturday, staff had to be told of the lack of fried eggs and then bacon as well as no clean mugs for coffee/tea – all things that they should have been on top of! This is not totally the kids’ fault but of management who don’t manage both on the day and the training that the staff are given. The building as a whole is clean and tidy but in need of a “spruce up” – certainly the exterior is in need of more than one coat of paint (after some wood rot treatment to some of the window frames). Would we stay here again – possibly although we would look around for something of the same price just to see what is available. The one bonus is that it is the closest to the station when carting heavy bags and suitcases to and from the trains.

We visited as part of a coach tour. Located near the train station and at the end of the High Street it is in a fairly good position. A Victorian pile, so has some character. The reception rooms are what you would expect but our bedroom’s decor was a bit tired although a decent size. The staff were helpful and the food offering was pretty good.

“Warm and cosy with old world charm”

Pleasantly surprised at this hotel after reading reviews wasn’t sure if i would like, several nooks to sit and have a quiet drink overlooking mountain, Room is old world charm in style with lots of room and huge bed, don’t like using shower over bath, however bathroom obviously just been updated... more

Pleasantly surprised at this hotel after reading reviews wasn’t sure if i would like, several nooks to sit and have a quiet drink overlooking mountain, Room is old world charm in style with lots of room and huge bed, don’t like using shower over bath, however bathroom obviously just been updated and was lovely and spacious. Plenty of storage and tables, chairs etc. & very close to walk to town.

“Disappointing”

Mainly caters for coach tours. The lift has a maximum capacity of 2 persons, but becomes overloaded and will only carry 1 person, so when a coach tour arrives, mainly of elderly people, the majority have to carry their luggage upstairs, as the queue for the lift is endless. Mainly caters for coach tours. The lift has a maximum capacity of 2 persons, but becomes overloaded and will only carry 1 person, so when a coach tour arrives, mainly of elderly people, the majority have to carry their luggage upstairs, as the queue for the lift is endless. Scaffolding at front of the building, no work in progress. We stayed in room 232 for 2 nights and the floor had a really bad slant as can be seen in the photo. There was a lack of maintenance, ie the wardrobe doors did not shut, bedside drawer would not close due to screws missing from bottom runner, bath panel corroded, bathroom lights need replacing. Breakfast average. Would not stay again.

Such a shame first impression outside of hotel really needed a good makeover. Windows are so badly requiring a paint and the scaffolding looks as if it's been there a while. Such a shame first impression outside of hotel really needed a good makeover. Windows are so badly requiring a paint and the scaffolding looks as if it's been there a while. The flowerbeds are overgrown as well. A little tender care to the flower beds would make the outdoor seating area an attractive area to sit for a drink. We had a superior double, the bed was king-size, sheets clean and we had a comfortable sleep. However the room spelt like old drains after a while you didn't notice until you went out and came back in again. It's quite a dark room. We were glad we only stayed for one night. Shower was passable not very hot. Room needed a good dust in parts. The saving grace was the Bistro food on Sunday night. Steak and ale pie was amazing. Breakfast was hot, good English breakfast choice but very little breads or croissants or other products to choose from. Also a four slot toasters for a whole dining room full of guests and even popping it on twice it didn't toast. Staff were all very friendly and greeting
