Our room was bright and clean, with a large TV screen calibrated to watch from the bed. A desk that can function as a vanity with the middle that can be lowered flat or can prop up with a mirror. Shelves and drawers in the closets. We had three rather large windows that opened. Little sheets of notepaper; loads of outlets. We had a standard room, and, even though the room itself was not extravagant, small touches made it feel like luxury: big bottle of Belu filtered water in the fridge, along with small containers of milk for coffee; four glass beverage cups; nice reusable coasters; decent artwork on the wall. Also, the rooms were well-designed; everything was within reach and we never bumped into anything. Of the five hotels we stayed at on this trip to Scotland, this was the only one with a bright, well-lit room, and also the only one that had a desk chair you could adjust to the right height for doing work on a laptop. The bathroom was large and well lit. Antipodes brand amenities: soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion. We had a shower and a bathtub; washcloths (not provided at the other hotels we stayed at), a rubber bath mat. The breakfast is sort of average; I’d try Society, a few doors down. Also for lunch or dinner, Howie’s, a few doors up is good. The service at the hotel was exemplary: housekeeping did a thorough job; reception desk staff were friendly, helpful, and efficient for the two issues we needed help with (adding an extra night’s stay when our current room was booked, and assistance after I had an accident outside the hotel). Furthermore, this must be one of the best-designed, most comfortable hotel rooms (including bathroom) that I’ve stayed in – and for a standard room that is something.

“If it’s within your budget, stay!”

I stayed at the Alex Waterloo Place whilst in Edinburgh on business. It is a great location right next to Princes Street and the St James quarter. The room was superb, it was huge with a great sized bathroom too. It had a queen sized bed, good pillows and a good sized desk. The bathroom had a very large bath and a separate walk in shower. The room had an iron and board, and also had dressing gowns. I didn’t eat at the hotel so can’t comment on it, but the bar was nice.

“Perfectly located”

This review is based on a stay in room # 819. This hotel had many good qualities and I can recommend it. Our room was very clean and there were sufficient outlets (a big problem in some hotels). It had a nice view, a refrigerator and a good bathroom with a shower (no tub) with excellent towels.... more

This review is based on a stay in room # 819. This hotel had many good qualities and I can recommend it. Our room was very clean and there were sufficient outlets (a big problem in some hotels). It had a nice view, a refrigerator and a good bathroom with a shower (no tub) with excellent towels. The most important quality was the location, within walking distance of most things, across the street from the hop-on bus, near a mall and the royal mile and easy to get anywhere from this spot. Elliot was an outstanding restaurant and the breakfast buffet had a choice of fruit, cheese, yogurt and cereal or you could order from their menu. The only negative for me in this room was that the mattress was very hard. I had some trouble sleeping. The internet was spotty also, but other than that I would most likely select this hotel again.

Stayed here for a works trip for one night. Very centrally located near the train station and walking distance to all the key places in the city. Modern rooms (new travel lodge design). Old building so the room was a funny shape. Room i was in at the very front on the road it was very noisy and a lot of light came into the room when it got dark. No bar or restaurant on site. Breakfast provided via a breakfast box not that great. They put a chair under the coat / clothes hanging area which means this couldn’t be used effectively at all. Chair couldn’t be moved any where else in the room without being in the way. General cleanliness was alright but, area near the window and secondary pains need some attention.
