On the morning or our arrival, the met office issued a weather warning due to a storm, advising not to travel with a possibility of danger to life. I had the task of calling the hotel with little notice with this information. However as we visit at Christmas time, we were keen to move the dates on a day each side of our original dates, it was considered safe then. I fully expected to have to pay for the Saturday night we wouldn't be arriving on now and also the extra night at the end of our intended stay but Owen on the desk whom I spoke to, was so understanding of our situation and whilst he couldn't refund our Saturday night stay, he shuffled things around and we didn't have to pay for the night added on at the end. All we had to pay was the difference of a Saturday night stay to a Monday which was about £100 extra. To say the notice we gave was short was an understatement but the most admiring quality from Owen was his genuine concern that we remain safe and not to travel. Hospitality staff don't have it easy but he was so kind, it made me glad I'd chosen the Grand again. Our room wasn't quite ready on arrival, there was no bath as requested but that was quickly changed and another room allocated. Our fridge was a bit warm and we left the room for breakfast next morning we mentioned at reception and hadn't even noticed that it had been changed when we returned less than an hour later, no fuss at all, talk about speedy customer service. We had breakfast for our stay and parked the car in the hotel car park too. The breakfast is amazing and all staff from front of house, housekeeping and restaurant have a smile on their face and are happy to help with any questions we had and there's always plenty of staff the hotel. We will probably continue to return as I could not fault the hotel, with the lovely Christmas feel or the super pleasant helpful staff. Worth the 5 hour long drive to get there. Merry Christmas 🎅🏻

“Heaven on earth.”

Where to start …… We needed somewhere special to celebrate our wedding anniversary and booked The Rise Restaurant @ The Grand on the recommendation of a friend and we are so glad we did. Faultless, perfect, amazing food, incredible staff and service, excellent wines. From the greeting at the front door, to being seated, dining and exiting honestly we only have praise for what they collectively deliver here. On arrival we were pleasantly greeted and arrival at The Rise our coats etc taken, escorted to our table and named introductions to staff - seated we later noticed a card on the table which was a personal message welcoming us and wishing us a happy Anniversary which we though was a lovely, thoughtful and very considerate thing to do. The meal and dessert were both amazing, beautifully presented , cooked to absolute perfection and simply mouth watering from the first bite to clean plates. Lovely to watch every single plate being prepared alongside the restaurant and the care and attention that is given to each dish. The drinks selection are varied and will more than cater for everyone’s individual taste and preferences. Thank you our only regret was not being able to stay at the Grand which not surprising due to demand was not available and had to stay at another nearby hotel. Thank you for a truly memorable and wonderful dining experience, can’t wait to do this again soon

Cannot recommend this Hotel highly enough. Our stay was very pleasurable. Every member of staff that we interacted with could not be more helpful and pleasant. Being older and only just recently left hospital following an operation I particularly booked a room with a walk in shower as I can't lift one of my legs high enough to access an over the bath shower; however for whatever reason this was not available upon arrival but without any fuss the check in team upgraded us to a junior suite which had the choice of both. We had originally planned to dine out within the city but found that after a full day of walking by late afternoon we were too tired to contemplate going back out again after getting changed, so ordered room service a couple of times; both times the food was hot, promptly delivered and very tasty. The only slight downside if we were to pick holes was that the lighting was a bit too dim especially in the midst of a cold dark winter. Other than that The hotel is in a prime location especially if arriving by train and is very close to all the main attractions.

I wouldn’t say that our stay was worth the cost (over £400 for the night!). I’ll start with the good points- staff are fab in particular the doormen and the waiters in the 1906 bar. Room great size, plenty of storage, clean, bathroom on the whole lovely. Less good points- bed hard as a rock, pillows barely any support. The shower should be better quality given the price. You would have expected fresh milk in the room- the mini bar wasn’t even cold. I have never queued for breakfast in a hotel and we travel across the world, staying in a range of hotels. If this is a common problem, then have guests book a time to avoid this. We waited 15 minutes. We then waited over 15 minutes for the tea and juice we ordered, again not impressive. We paid £35 for valet parking. When we arrived I couldn’t fault the doorman Pav. He was fabulous! But when we went to leave and asked for our car, we were then asked to walk down the road to it, not quite the valet parking we paid for. Whilst the bar was lovely, I think the service charge is cheeky and again it is expensive… It is a lovely Pool and gym are tired, they need updating. Gym equipment is rusty, pool tiles around the pool area are mouldy. Overall, lovely hotel, but there are quite a few niggles that shouldn’t be occurring in such an establishment.
