Been to the FB a few times before and it’s always been great. Sadly, this time they let themselves down. We were in a party of 8 and 5 of us chose the king prawn cocktail to start with. Oh my goodness, how disappointed we were to have a plate of lettuce, a few cherry tomatoes, some tiny prawn shavings and 3 king prawns in. Marie Rose sauce presented to us as an appetiser…for the bargain price of £11.95. Fair to say we were not happy. Main courses were pretty good, except my own truffle mac and cheese which tasted ok but was dry and not at all gooey and unctuous as you’d usually expect. Service was good, friendly and accommodating, and they did acknowledge the poor starters by knocking the pice of 2 of the 5 prawn cocktails off the bill…but I’m not going to be going back in a hurry, purely from a value perspective. To be fair it was a busy service in the run up to Christmas so they may have been running short of ingredients, but I would rather have been told that there wasn’t enough to go round and choose an alternative, rather than be presented with a very poor dish like the starters we were given.

Our annual Christmas visit has been a highlight pre the madness beginning and we normally book a different place to stay, I like the Quirky side of things and the Fat Badger seemed to hit the bill from the photos and in some ways it lived up to these but in others it fell short, found the reception crammed at the bottom of the narrow flight of stairs that has a storage unit also in situ very strange causing problems getting past, the room was fine for a one night stay but not for anything longer due to lack of storage, decor was dark but atmospheric with what my companion says was shabby chic, the bed was very comfortable and the bedding lovely and clean with a quality feel and the bathroom again was fine with a nice shower. The Secret Garden was a nice surprise and the heaters under the umbrellas were warm enough for us to stay there for an hour before going out for evening meal,we found the room being on the front made it very noisy with people leaving the pub and the premises in the block past midnight and before 7 in the morning bit off an inconvenience, breakfast was a great experience the service and especially the food was fantastic, the coffee was superb and not the normal insipid hotel brown water. Unfortunately that's the good bits over as I have to say the hotel doesn't justify the price I paid, its run as a pub with a restaurant and also bedrooms with the hotel being the last on the list of priorities with everything being crammed into a small space it doesn't say welcome,I paid far less last year for a manor house experience near to the racecourse and will be booking it again next time we come to York.
