We booked two nights in this hotel. We arrived at the hotel about 30 mins before check in time, but the lady on the desk very kindly accommodated us and let us check in early. We had a standard double room on the top floor. The room had a super king bed, with a relatively firm mattress, but comfortable and clean. The only issue we had was that the duvet was clearly a double duvet inside a super king duvet cover as there was a good ft of empty duvet cover either side, which I’m sure they would have rectified if we had asked. Another good thing was there was options of soft and firm pillows and you could ask for more from the reception desk. The hotel was nice and quiet, we weren’t disturbed by other guests or street noise even though it is quite close to the city centre. Occasionally after running a tap there was a loud noise that sounded like the bathroom was preparing for take off. We really enjoyed our stay, reasonable walking distance from everything you could want to see in York. We visited the York castle museum which was really good, and we also visited the Van Gogh experience, both of which were right round the corner. The Shambles market was a 5 min walk and there was a fantastic food festival too. When we ran out of tea, milk and toilet roll. We simply asked the lady at the desk and she was so lovely, restocking us without question. The only thing I could say was less than desirable was that when we checked out, a man that was possibly the hotel manager accosted us. He asked how our stay was, which is fine of course, but he then quite forcibly asked me to get my phone out, open the booking.com app and review the hotel then and there. He then took the phone from my hand and filled out the review himself putting 10/10s on all of the review categories. I have since removed that review, not because we didn’t have a good time, but because he was so pushy. It was very bizarre. Overall, we had a lovely time and would definitely stay again, and please rest assured that we would have left a lovely review, the manager did not need to ambush us on exit. Bless him.

While this hotel be as familiar as other Holiday Inn's, what it delivers is a very easy walk to old York. More than anything this is why I recommend you consider it. Within only a matter of a few minutes you can be meandering through the Shambles and other fascinating windy streets, and within a few more be at York Minster. Our bed was on the smaller side, but I gather larger beds were available. The bathroom was large, well lit, and clean. The free breakfast has lots of options. Stay here for the easy access to Old York.

We got there very early, and asked about parking. As the website states 'Parking!' we assumed it meant 'Parking!'. It doesn't. It means you have to pay £16 for 24 hours in the tiniest car park known to man behind the hotel, around which we drove for about ten minutes until someone left...however, the reception lady was very pleasant. She did say she would try to get us in earlier - it wasn't a huge issue, as we there to visit our daughter at York university so spent the morning in the town (overpriced, overcrowded and trading solely off the fact that one part of Harry Potter was apparently by the place. How many potion experience's, wand shops and locals dressed up as 16th century olde worlde peasants does one small street need? I digress). It is a beautiful small city to be fair, but I don't recall it being London #2 for everything price wise. We then walked to our daughter's college - about an hour, and got back around 3pm, We checked in fine and had a room on the first floor which was basically a room. Bland, corporate, chilly - we turned the heating up but it would have been nice if this had been done before we got in. Comfy bed, quiet and a reasonable bathroom with average power shower. We didn't pay full price thank god - as it would have cost us £235 for one night without breakfast. Tip - go to Wetherspoons across the road and pay a fiver instead of the £14,95 we were told breakfast would be each! Summing up, does it's job, it's a place to sleep
