Needed somewhere for a one-night family stopover. This hotel offered the best value overall. The building is old but the rooms themselves are fine, refurbished to a decent level although some bits of them clearly show their age (particular highlight was the radiator thermostat snapping off in my hand, meaning the radiator was stuck on full blast). The corridors really could do with some refurbishment and brightening up though. Plenty of free parking and very convenient for central York by bus or taxi - well worth staying here if it’s significantly cheaper than a city centre hotel. Backs on to the racecourse though - would definitely NOT stay here with children on a race weekend, as it would likely be noisy and rammed. Good breakfast, loads of choice, friendly staff manning it and excellent value if eating with kids. At the time of writing it’s £12/person if booked the night before (cheaper than paying on the day) and kids eat free, so £24 for a family of 5. Busy throughout the morning, but plenty of staff keeping things moving. Not the most modern or bright hotel we’ve ever stayed in but perfectly acceptable for a 1 or 2 night break and would likely do so again.

“Two night Stay”

We stayed at this hotel for a two night break. Our room on the third floor had a King sized bed, an easy chair , a round side table, a work bench and desk chair, and a roomy wardrobe. Althoughthe bathroom had a walk in shower, the room was very compact. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. There was a reasonable chioce on the bar menu, and the breakfasts were excellent. We will stay here again next time we are in the area. The hotel isn't far from the ring road, but the traffic was very heavy when we arrived at about 3.30pm on a Sunday afternoon, and getting in the correct lane was confusing (Nothing to do with the Hotel!).

“Okay but …”

We stayed at this hotel in 2021 just before the last of the Covid restrictions were lifted and were very impressed with it at that time so we decided to to choose it again for a short break of 3 nights. We stayed at this hotel in 2021 just before the last of the Covid restrictions were lifted and were very impressed with it at that time so we decided to to choose it again for a short break of 3 nights. Now perhaps I had been seeing it through rose tinted spectacles but it certainly wasn’t as good. The bathroom is small and there’s not much that can be done about that but it was the lack of facilities in the room that didn’t make it any better than a Premier Inn/ Travelodge. There were no toiletries other than soap and shampoo (no conditioner or body lotion- I don’t expect the individual “portions” anymore), no extras on the drinks tray such as fruit infusions, herbal teas, drinking chocolate or packets of biscuits (just tea and coffee), no hairdryer, no room safe, no restaurant menu and no toilet brush (we don’t have our room serviced for short stays as I have medical equipment I don’t want anyone to touch). There was an iron and ironing board, which I have come to expect from Holiday Inns, and adequate hanging space, a low cupboard but no drawers. On the plus side the breakfast was very good, hot food was hot and everything was regularly replenished. My only gripe was that there was no lactose free milk but this is something that applies to every UK hotel I have stayed in. We ate in the restaurant one night and the food was good then too. The hotel is clean and all of the staff members we encountered were very friendly. The hotel is located a couple of miles south of the city centre and easily reached by regular buses that stop outside the rail station so you don’t need to use your car. It is on a main road but is still a quiet location away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. On leaving we expected to be asked if we had enjoyed our stay, was everything okay etc when we could have raised the above points… but weren’t.
