Looking at a two day break to York, I Googled accommodation and came across 23 St Mary's. I booked three rooms for myself and friends. 23 St Mary's provided everything you'd wish for a hassle free stay. Exceptionally clean, helpful and friendly staff, plentiful and tasty breakfast, great location and generally a lovely feel throughout the well decorated guest house. If I had to nitpick, my friends and I found our rooms to be very hot but overall it didn't distract from a very pleasant stay. Thank you

Located in a charming street of early Victorian large terrace houses, conveniently 5 minutes’ walk from the train station. Personal welcome which exemplifies how this is very much a private concern, so specific requests can usually be accommodated. It also explains why they prefer payment in cash. … more

Located in a charming street of early Victorian large terrace houses, conveniently 5 minutes’ walk from the train station. Personal welcome which exemplifies how this is very much a private concern, so specific requests can usually be accommodated. It also explains why they prefer payment in cash. Rooms are authentically furnished, comfortable bed and clean bathroom. We had to be elsewhere, so didn’t stay for breakfast.

“Last minute booking for Yorkshire Marathon”

Excellent communication from the hosts. Lovely quaint street & we reserved a parking spot at the rear of the property, although ridiculously tight with a Volvo ! Excellent communication from the hosts. Lovely quaint street & we reserved a parking spot at the rear of the property, although ridiculously tight with a Volvo ! Very good walking distance to the city centre & smart building Easy instructions to access after 4pm when the hosts aren’t there. Room 4 is tiny and ridiculously hot?!?! We had the sash window wide open most of the time which meant it was then a little noisy. The fan didn’t hold its position when you tightened it, just flopped pointing down, so it didn’t serve its purpose The one chair in the room had a wonky leg and made it unsafe to sit on No instructions how to get the tv on and after trying everything contacted the hosts and apparently you had to switch one of the switches next to the bed which looked like a wall light switch ??? Bizarre Cut finger on a screw sticking out of the bathroom door handle Nice touch was the chocolate hanging in a pouch on the door to the room Felt at £170 it was highly inflated just for the particular weekend of the marathon

Meeting up with friends for 3 nights, this guest house was in the perfect spot, less than 8 minutes' walk from the station along the rail bridge footpath over the river. Meeting up with friends for 3 nights, this guest house was in the perfect spot, less than 8 minutes' walk from the station along the rail bridge footpath over the river. Also five minutes' walk through the very nice Museum Gardens to the city centre, the Minster and the other central sights. No need for a car although there is parking available very close by. The rooms are relatively small but very comfortable with newly refitted en-suites, tv, tea/coffee, wifi, very comfortable beds and very clean. The breakfasts were excellent, freshly cooked full English to choice, fruit salads, cereals, juices and yogurt plus plentiful tea/coffee. The staff are very friendly, very willing and helpful and the cost is very reasonable with breakfast extra. I didn't think that was unreasonable either even without some of the ornaments you may find in hotels. eg rolls/croissants, pastries, cold cuts. We also had a chilled bottle to welcome us. The view out is not spectacular but that was not a worry for us. Lack of a lift may be an issue for some who may find stairs difficult. Nevertheless the excellent location and staff are commendable.
