My review is very similar to others on here but none the less here goes.... On arrival and past two seriously viscious speed humps we surveyed a very fine looking establishment with immaculate hedges and lawns. A promising start that went down hill fast when upon checking in I was asked for a £50 card payment to cover any damage we might cause. To do that I would need to assess the areas I might possibly be accused of damaging akin to to renting a hire car. That I suggested was neither possible or reasonable. The manager was called and a lady with less charm than a harrassed traffic warden reconsidered and told me it was in case we failed to pay for any items during our stay. Non negotiable. No pay - no stay. What a start. The room was in one of the courtyard buildings and was perfectly fine bar two very important items. 1. The matress was like nothing I have ever experienced almost as if it was half the depth of a traditional matress no matter how cheap. In fact as you sat on it I was not sure it even had a matress as you effectively sat on the solid block board it rested upon. Frankly the worst I have ever had the misfortune to spend a night on. 2. The shower was totally kaput as far as tempreture control was concerned, either scolding hot or off. Unusable. On the plus side it was quiet and in generally good order. TV was excellent so there was that. Breakfast was taken in a souless room within the main house and our order taken by a very sour faced woman who had earlier belowed across an empty room to ask our room number. Not once but twice, I had my back to her and at first did not believe she was adressing myself. Quite how this was considered acceptable I have no idea. Breakfast was one of every thing, if you wanted anything additional such as another egg that would be an extra £1.50 - per item. The walk in rate for this breakfast was a not inconsiderable £20 per head with everything above your basics extra. My wife ordered eggs benedict asking for bacon instead of ham. What arrived was a muffin split in two with a single thin piece of bacon resting across the two halves plus the obligatory two eggs and hollandaise. Would it have killed them to serve two pieces of bacon? On the evidence observed probably yes. That whole layered additional cost seemed to be the way the place was being run. Think Ryanair - cheap enough for the room but the extras will cost you! Finally the 'dog friendly' tale spun by this hotel is an utter lie. Dog tolerant would be a better description. Firstly £25 per dog per night is hardly a dog friendly rate and is not at all clear on booking sites. Secondly the poor dears are allowed in the bar and no where else. To summarise the gardener is easly the most valued person within this establishment as his efforts really help to compensate for the miserable manager and the breakfast host ( it has to be said the waitresses seemed perfectly smiley and normal). The pricing structure is all wrong and leaves a very poor impression and I suspect is losing them busines hand over fist - a number of guests were seen taking taxis to Corsham they explained in the morning they felt the restaurant was particularly poor both the food and the price, they having eaten there once at the start of their five day stays. This hotel should be doing every thing to keep their guests at the hotel and yet seem to be doing the very reverse. Could be great - needs new management and fresh thinking.
