“Good location - average stay”

This hotel is in a great location for the beach (quite near the zigzag) and an easy stroll into town. There is a spacious lounge area and bar downstairs and books on offer. We didn't use the spa facilities. I believe some rooms have been recently redecorated and 103 certainly had attractive furnishings. Neither the bedroom or the shower room were huge, but adequate for our needs. It didn't look like the shower room had been completely refurbished but it was fine. We had paid extra for a sea view and had a huge terrace which was lovely to sit out on, but the view was restricted by the huge glass roof sticking out at the front. Also - unfortunately the four rooms benefiting from the terraces were neither private nor secure since there was no division other than a couple of poles running from the room to the front wall and, whilst sitting on the terrace, you could see right into the neighbouring room. The breakfast was very disappointing... NO fresh bread/rolls (only sliced bread for toast), no fresh fruit, very boring cereals, muesli that had virtually no fruit in it and could have benefited from a dish of sultanas/nuts etc. Only choice of eggs for 2 mornings was fried; 3rd morning there was some dry scrambled eggs. Not very hot and not automatically replenished in the last 10-15 minutes of service. Some days there was water, some days not. Staff were polite enough but only Anusha on check out was at all warm and interested. On check in the two receptionists ignored us until one of them finished what she was doing. We'd have been happy if she'd just acknowledged our presence and said she'd be with us in a moment. It's nice to be made to feel welcome after a long drive and should be a priority. One evening we had to report an invasion of flies in our room. We were told both maintenance and housekeeping had gone home and they didn't have any fly spray. We were asked to give them 10 minutes but nobody called us. It turned out they had checked and we thanked them for that, but it would be nice if they had let us know. Staff in the breakfast room were quite lacklustre too... they all seemed to be focused on cleaning tables rather than welcoming and/or helping guests.

Terrific location and sea view with great bus links to City centre, Poole and Mudeford/Christchurch. The room was very good with all that one would expect. Very recently and tastefully refurbished. The rest of the hotel was looking rather tired and carpets on floor 1 were a disgrace. The restaurant was poor even for a 3* hotel with service levels pretty poor, and the food was unexciting too. It should do much better. The same group - Oceana - has the adjacent 4* hotel and that really showed how a restaurant should be run. The Suncliff staff need to be better managed and trained. The 'pub' was not particularly appealing.
