After reading the reviews I decided to book an economy single room in the Berce Hotel. The reviews appeared to be mixed. When I arrived I was taken down to the dreaded basement room. It feels like a storage room that was converted into a single room below street level. Taking into account the star rating of the Hotel and the the relative price of my economy room the room wasn’t too bad. It’s not a place for luxury but being a solo traveller and just needing a place to sleep and get washed it was adequate. I get the feeling that if you pay the least you will likely be given this room. The fridge barely worked (Not reliable) and the TV wasn’t great. It is also below street level so expect to hear the street noise early in the morning. But if you just need a bed to sleep and a place to get washed (a shower)then it should suffice. Just remember there will likely be street noise as it’s below ground level. The location of the Hotel was great for seeing all the local sights. When the penthouse suite became available the owner kindly upgraded me for my final few nights. The view of the Bosporus from the top was fantastic. Very different from the basement room. The lesson I learned from this experience is you get what you pay for…if you pay cheap then don’t expect any frills..but you can’t beat the location or the view from the penthouse suite. As a solo traveller simply interested in a bed for the night with washing facilities conveniently located I would stay again if visiting Istanbul in the future. The owner was very helpful too in providing local advice and the boat trip on the Bosporus he arranged was one of my favourite excursions. One point I would change if given my time again would be to go further afield to buy my local sim. The cheapest deal the local shop at the end of the road did was a 25 Gb Turkcall deal… whereas otherTurkcell shops in the area gave the option of a 10Gb deal which came at a much cheaper price.
