“Excellent service, disappointing property”

Decided to stay at Athenee as an alternative to our usual hotel. It’s a little out of the way from where we wanted to be, which was at Siam, but can’t say it’s not inconvenient. Short 5 minute walk takes you to Central Embasssy where you’re connected to Central Chidlom, or to the Phloen Chit bts.... more

Decided to stay at Athenee as an alternative to our usual hotel. It’s a little out of the way from where we wanted to be, which was at Siam, but can’t say it’s not inconvenient. Short 5 minute walk takes you to Central Embasssy where you’re connected to Central Chidlom, or to the Phloen Chit bts. No lack of food choices or shopping at either places. Supermarket at Central Chidlom is divine. Service is excellent. From check in to check out, staff are attentive, friendly and engaging. Eager to assist and there to ask if you need help before you even realise it. Housekeeping needs some work. We left the room in the late morning, returned 5 hours later and the room was still not cleaned. So every morning we have to ask for immediate housekeeping when we leave for the day. Used glasses were not cleaned properly, they were cloudy and had a stale smell. Teas and coffees were arbitrarily replenished. Some days to excess, some days completely overlooked. Used cutlery, plates and napkins were also not taken away or replaced. We had a suite, very spacious room on a high floor but it’s so very dark. With lack of natural light, lighting in the room needs to be amped up. Bathroom has absolutely no windows, which is ok, but lights are all spotlights, dim and not capable of giving sufficient light. Felt like a cave. Lights and light switches were also not working. We made several requests for them to be fixed, but nothing was done. Amenities were well thought out and generous. Replenished daily. Nice byredo toiletries, and I love the use of large bottles that are not fixed to a wall. Couches and cushions needed a good clean, they are not fresh smelling and pretty saggy. Didn’t want to sit around despite ample seating for lounging. Breakfast is included, this is the classic case of quantity over quality. Lots and lots of choices, miles of food at the Raintree Cafe, but so mediocre and catering to the masses. Tourist grade hotels catering to large tour groups come to mind. There is an option of dining at the lounge, options are limited but at least it didn’t feel like a zoo. Afternoon tea however is not worth going, food is equally mediocre, if not worse. Nice selection of drinks though, and the most attentive waitstaff. So this hotel has been around for a while. In keeping with the classic Thai style, I understand the color scheme and decor, and perhaps keeping with the Plaza Athenee scheme, the use of dark reds and greys. Makes the room even darker and dreary. Things are however pretty run down and very dated. Can’t be classic if you feel it’s dated! At this price point, and holding itself up as a premiere luxury hotel in Bangkok, this one falls pretty short. With the exception of the warmth of service staff, nothing about this hotel warrants the luxury collection label. This is not a hotel where we’ll come back to.
