We had a wonderful stay at Athenee Hotel. We celebrated Christmas at the hotel. The hotel had carolers on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day along with a visit from Santa. A big thank you to Marisa and the breakfast team at the Rain Tree Cafe for starting our day off wonderfully. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. There are so many food choices, our favorites ate the juice bar, cook to order egg station and the big selection of ice creams. We really enjoyed the Muay Thai class. You’ll have a great workout and learn some new moves. We also signed up for the flower folding and learned various ways the fold the lotus flower and a fish with pandan leaves. Lastly, as Marriott Titanium members, we had access to the club lounge for tea and non-alcoholic beverages during the day. They had light snack for afternoon tea time. At night, we enjoyed our lounge time at Glaz Bar and Petal Cafe since we’re with our child. We had a great end to our night enjoying food and drinks together.

The hotel is in central Bangkok in an upmarket district where most of the foreign embassies are located. It is a slightly older property which is typical of the Luxury collection but the decor is still good enough to be considered high end. We looked at a lot of hotels prior to booking the Athanee as there is a lot of competition in Bangkok. As we were staying over the New Year period we expected rates to be elevated. Most hotels seemed to double their rates for this time so finding value for money was challenging. Ideally we would have chosen a hotel on the river but with rates starting at £600 per night for most of the major chain hotels going upwards of £1,000 for the top named brands we didn't see the value. The Athanee offered rooms on the club floor which included dedicated club checkin, breakfast in either the Raintree Cafe or Club Lounge, all day coffee and soft drinks, afternoon tea and evening canapés and beer, wine, cocktails or softdrinks. The rate also offered free laundry for 2 items per person per day which was a good bonus. This package was around 20% cheaper than other equivalent hotels. Our club room was located on the 24th floor which gave a decent city view. It was spacious with a good quality comfortable bed, bath, large shower and came with extra bathroom amenities. We received a nice fruit basket and chocolates on arrival. The gym is located on the 4th floor beside the pool and offered a good range of modern equipment. Unfortunately we were unable to use the pool as there were very few spaces to sit which were taken early in the day and never became vacant. Permitting large children's inflatables in the pool was another reason we avoided it. It certainly wasn't an adult area where you could sit and relax. The club floor was always extremely busy especially in the evenings. We found the food at afternoon tea and evening canapés to be repetitive and not particularly high quality. The scones were always dry and the cakes bland. The savoury evening canapés tended to be filled pastry cases and sandwiches. There were very few if any vegetarian choices. The evening cocktails were ok but limited in choice. We had a much better experience at the Intercontinental in Chiang Mai where we were offered a great afternoon tea that changed daily which was a very high standard. They also had signature cocktails in the evening and gourmet canapés. In comparison the Athanee was a let down. When we checked in at the club floor we were told the dress code was smart casual with no flip flops permitted. Every evening there were guests wearing shirts, singlets, tatty shorts, flip flops and even slippers. Why have a dress code if you don't enforce it? We booked the New Year's eve buffet and champagne package which was surprisingly good and reasonably priced. We were pleasantly surprised that the champagne was Tattinger and there was plenty on offer. The food was very good as well with lobster, crab claws, lamb chops, roast beef amongst the western offerings along with Chinese, Japanese, Middle Eastern and Indian choices. We enjoyed the evening although the live music which was playing in the bar outside was a bit bland and there was no other entertainment which surprised us. We would have preferred some traditional Thai entertainment as well. The staff at the hotel are very enthusiastic and try very hard to ensure you have a stress free stay. They do a good job at breakfast organising seating and coffees which is a challenge given the number of covers. The enthusiasm of some staff can be a bit overwhelming and we felt awkward on some occasions such as calling the lift which often involved several staff running over to push the button for us. We understand they mean well but we prefer a more laid back style of service. We felt the hotel was a decent choice for a 3 night stay and the club package offered value for money at the peak time we stayed. We would probably opt for a riverside location and better pool area if this was available next time at a competitive price.

We’d a wonderful stay for our Xmas holiday at the Hotel, location is good and only a few minutes walking distance to BTS . We’d like to express our sincere appreciation to all staff working at Rain Tree Cafe, they’re well trained and very attentive to their customers, especially thanks to Marisa, Waraporn and Som(Orange), they ‘re always with friendly smiles and are very willing to answer our questions, I hope Marisa doesn’t mind our questions about the coffee ☕️.
