“Weekend in Berne”

Lovely and historic hotel directly next to the central train station. The staff is friendly and the massage is wonderful. I can only recommend this place for those who seek some relaxation. We went here for a weekend without kids and really enjoyed ourselves.

This hotel has everything you need for a pampered, hospitable and efficient stay! This is my second week long stay at this hotel and it never disappoints. The staff is especially friendly and knowledgeable. The convenience of being right across the train station is great - they even lend you free dry gas and towels to float down the river and feel like a real local! I highly recommend!

We spent 5 days at this hotel and enjoyed amazing service from everyone we encountered. From guest relations at the front desk, to the cigar lounge, to the team at the Sky Terrace. They were exemplary; always helping and recommending. Going "above and beyond." Luca J. at the front desk did a great job helping us with our plans for the day, reservation at the Sky Terrace, and any issues we had. The rooms are nice and big for Europe. We had a lovely welcome amenity and the spa was very unique for being in the basement. (Note, there is not a full pool, so it wouldn't appeal to children.) The location is great for exploring; just steps away from the train station entrance and old town. You are given a free transportation pass to get around, if you would like to use the public transportation. This isn't their fault, but I did miss having a view. The way the hotel is situated, there are no views from the windows (but there are from the Sky Terrace). I will also echo a previous reviewer in that the spa times are too limited. We had to cut our day short in Lucerne in order to make it back with just an hour in the spa. We couldn't make it back in time the other days. I agree that the time should be closing at 10:00 p.m. If it is warm, you shouldn't expect US-style air conditioning. The system they have will not remove the humidity from the air and makes it feel quite warm (it's an "air circulator"). However, if you ask, they will give you what they call a fan, but is actually a portable air conditioner. This greatly improved our sleep on the last few nights. I didn't try the breakfast as we had to leave early and it the price made it prohibitive to do quickly (45 franc a person). I would have loved to have a quick option in the restaurant--like a cappuccino and croissant. If that was available, I didn't know about it. And, honestly we found some amazing food in the train station (one thing you won't likely find in the US!). All in all, it was a lovely visit and I highly recommend!

I had communicated with the hotel beforehand, emphasising that cleanliness was very important to me. However, when I walked into the first room, there were significant problems with cleanliness - the wooden floor didn't seem to have been properly cleaned, I found sticky hairs. I was given a bottle of champagne as an apology. The duty manager was very professional about the whole thing (thanks!). How could this happen, especially after I had specifically asked for extra attention to cleanliness? The room itself was spacious and well laid out, and the bed was comfortable, although 1-2 pillows had a strange smell, possibly from bad detergent. The shower was excellent, the TV worked perfectly and I had no problems with the WiFi. Unfortunately, the hotel doesn't have proper air conditioning, which made the first night unbearable. Opening the window (during night) wasn't an option either, as the hotel is right next to the main train station, and it remained noisy well into the night. On the second day, I was given a portable air conditioner with a pipe (to hang out of the window), which wasn't ideal either. Breakfast was a disappointment. Jack's Brasserie was rather gloomy in the morning, the buffet was mediocre at best (3 star level) and the coffee was not good. On the second and third mornings, I skipped breakfast altogether, which is a shame for a Leading Hotels of the World hotel (I usually love breakfast!) On a positive note, the ladies at reception were absolutely wonderful - warm and welcoming. In stark contrast, the young men at reception ignored me as a guest and did not even offer a simple greeting (in 3 days!). Wrong job?
