My Honey and I stayed here two days as part of Viking River cruise extension. All arrangements were made by Viking, so we did not choose this hotel. The hotel is very modern in style and facilities. The hotel lobby is very expansive with a bar/restaurant located in the center area. We ate most of our meals here and they were outstanding. The Checkpoint bar was also a fun spot to enjoy some adult drinks. As for the room, all the controls for lights, room temperature are electronic, and not completely intuitive. The room was small, spartan but clean and comfortable. There is a small refrigerator in room that has various drinks that are all complementary. The bed was very comfortable with two split comforters, one for each partner which avoids the issue of "hogging the blanket". We were on the fifth floor and we did not have a city view. We left curtains closed rather then look at the commercial building adjacent. We did find some English speaking TV channels which was delightful. The shower pressure was very good with hand wand and rain head. Even the elevator controls are electronic touch screen with motion sensors to turn hall light on. The hotel location was perfect if you want to walk to old city center. The #2 and #6 Trams were steps away and were free with card provided by hotel. We were about a twenty minute walk from river. Breakfast on the third floor was included with stay. We only ate breakfast here once but the selections were wide, varied and delicious. The chef cooked eggs to order and the buffet was abundant and well stocked. They had Everything. They even had an automatic coffee machine were you could make yourself anything you would desire a Cappuccino or Latte. All our interactions with the staff were friendly and prompt, with impeccable service provided. If you are into visiting art galleries and museums, Basel is a city you should visit. Our stay at the Hyperion was enjoyable but my perference would have been a older hotel with character.

The location is some 20 minutes from the center on foot according to Google maps but the front desk provides you with city passes for free public transportation. THey have a garage at CHF40. We did not try their breakfast.

“Perfect location but not on top quality level”

Hyperion Basel is overall very nice. The location is perfect for exploring Basel. Within 15 minutes you can walk to the river Rhine, where you’ll find many nice restaurants. Hyperion Basel is overall very nice. The location is perfect for exploring Basel. Within 15 minutes you can walk to the river Rhine, where you’ll find many nice restaurants. It is best to book a room with a city view, on a high floor, we were on floor 13. There’s also a bar on floor 31, this bar is not part of the hotel but being a hotel guest, you can get in fee of charge, which is nice. The views are amazing. You also get free public transport tickets upon check in, which is great. The room itself was small but nice, sheets were good, bathroom very nice, but the bed itself, yes it was comfortable but it made a lot of noise when moving around, that was not so pleasant. What we found a bit disappointing was the fact that in front of the big windows in our room, there was a large tv, blocking the view, and it could not be moved aside. It’s quite pointless to book a room to enjoy the views and then having a huge tv blocking it. We especially came there for the views, not for watching tv. We didn’t try the restaurant because there are such nice places near the river, it’s worth going out there for a meal. Checkout was also a bit of an issue. I started speaking in English to the receptionist, as I had my American friend with me, and the receptionist, who had somehow noticed that I was German, snapped at me, telling me to speak in German with her. I found this very rude. I can definitely choose what language I want to speak, I don’t understand what her problem was. Also, when I asked her later for my bag in the luggage room, when I came back from a last little walk in the town, and was slightly running late for my train, she was annoyed and rolled her eyes. This behavior is not professional. I have been to 27 countries and to many top level places and I know what good quality is. This was not. So, overall a good experience but unfortunately tainted by the blocked view and by the impolite receptionist.
