It has a large cross-country skiing area and also organises night routes with snowmobiles as well as nights for stargazing. Hikers with less experience with climbing can just explore the Sierra Nevada National Park, starting at its El Dornajo interpretation centre.
  • Guests at Meliá Sol y Nieve say: Meliá dominate Sierra Nevada with two large hotels so they face limited competition and can charge accordingly - and probably do. Valet parking is a nice touch and at an extortionate 24 euros per day is only 2 euros more per day than the public car. Friendly reception and luggage delivery to room. Rooms are small and hot in winter - so leave window open day and night if you want it cool (which is bonkers in an era of reducing wasted energy). There don’t seem to be double beds, only twins which of course give the hotel maximum flexibility but may not be what couples want. Ski lockers are handy in the basement but the locks often don’t work - both ours failed twice so we gave up locking them. The spa is pretty impressive and so is the extra charge; however if small children are badgering you for a swim they go free under 12 (bring a hair cover to avoid a 4 euro charge). The breakfast choice is huge and very good but be warned that - if it’s busy - unless you get someone in the queue by 7.50 for the 8am opening hour, you may find yourself queuing for the second sitting at around 08.20-30, which is frustrating if you want to get skiing. Despite paying an eye watering €1000 euros a night for four people in two rooms, I’d probably stay here again, while wishing there was more competition in town to drive prices down. One last thing - Sierra Nevada is a steep town and there’s no parking in the centre, so you want to be really sure about how far, and how many steps are involved, in carrying your skis to the lifts. The two Meliá hotels are as close as any.
