“Lovely last two nights in Spain”

A beautiful building, beautiful setting, and so near Bilbao airport. A lovely two night stay. Very convenient for the coast too if you have the time, and inland is gorgeous countryside. The staff are really charming. Menu is enticing and no need to repeat meal choices over our stay.

This magnificent hotel, situated close to the airport (5 minutes driving, but no noise from airport), within golf club, is perfect place to stay in Bilbao. It’s just ten minutes to Bilbao center, close to Getxo, Plentzia, other tourist destinations. The hotel is situated within renovated palace, each room has its own concept of amazing decoration. Nice view, wonderful furniture, spacious modern bathroom with marble, excellent staff and good restaurant. They have a lot of original antique pieces in decoration. You have also access to the swimming pool and fitness, some conference rooms for corporate meetings, library and even chapel within the hotel area. The restaurant has terrace, the breakfast has variety of fresh products and dishes. The cleaning in the hotel is very thorough and always perfectly done. In our case special thank to Erika and Mikel, those employees converted the stay of our group in unforgettable experience.

Hotel is very impressive on approach and reception area is quite grand. Receptionists weren’t in a rush to talk to us as busy talking to each other so I said hola in the end to let them know we were right in front of them. One looked up and said hola we found out from her it was her first week and she didn’t know much about the hotel. We asked if there was a menu and the receptionist looked at the experienced lady who said yes it’s on the website, we then asked if we needed to book and the receptionist said yes so we asked if there was information in the room to which the reply was no. I asked if there was air con in the room and the receptionist said she didn’t know and looked at the other one who was now on the phone. We were given our key and told where the lift was. Went into the room and wasn’t impressed. It was magnolia walls with very flowery old fashioned curtains. There was a tiny arm chair and coffee table. A balcony that had a rotten wooden balcony rail that with some force could easily be snapped. The view was lovely and we could see across to the mountains in the far distance. The bed was quite hard and you could feel springs. Coffee machine in room which we didn’t use, air con was terrible. We chose to have the balcony doors open, as it was raining outside it cooled the room significantly that was originally quite stuffy. This plan had to change because the next door balcony was smoking some strong cigarettes and the smoke was coming into our room so we had to shut the doors. My hubby got our fan out of the car which sorted the problem. We ate in the restaurant even though the menu was very limited for non fish eaters. I was going to have stew but this was off so that left either duck or steak. We both chose steak, the waitress asked if we wanted bread and we said yes please. It took a while to come out and when it did it was very hot but no butter or olive oil so we asked for some butter and the waitress said yes. Around 10/15 minutes later we still hadn’t received any butter despite us only sharing the restaurant with one other table. So I asked her again as she went to greet another couple entering and she said yes and went to get some. When it came it felt frozen and we couldn’t spread it as the bread had now cooled down. The steaks arrived shortly after and they weren’t sirloin as it said but fillet to our delight as we much prefer fillet! It came with some roast potato’s that were extremely hot. The steak hadn’t been rested so our plates were full of blood and juices, but it was lovely. We thought it should have had something else on the plate such as mushrooms, asparagus or tomatoes but it was just meat and potatoes. The restaurant started getting busy and we weren’t asked how our food was or asked if we wanted another drink. A waiter came and cleared our plates and asked if we wanted desert. We opted for the strawberry desert and waited, we waited for around 20 minutes which was now 8.40 (we sat down at 7.30) we called for the bill as didn’t really want to wait to eat this late. The waitress brought the bill and one desert she apologised and said the other desert will be here soon. We ate the desert and paid. We didn’t leave a tip as the service was shockingly bad. Didn’t sleep great as the room was stuffy, bed was hard and if one person moved it would wake the other one. Shower was lovely and bathroom and room very clean. Toilet moves when you sit on it and makes a loud noise when it moves which again wakes the sleeping person up. Breakfast was ok although there were eggs and spicy sausage everything else was cakes and bread there was a bit of fruit but hubby picked an orange that had seen better days. No one greeted us or showed us to the table. We had to figure out it was a buffet and helped ourselves by following another couple into the room with all the food. Not impressed and it certainly doesn’t resemble a palace would not return here

Having stayed here on a couple of occasions over the last twenty years, the hotel has possibly lost a bit of its appeal. It’s still good value depending on the season and the surrounding scenery is lovely but there’s not much to do if you leave the hotel grounds. We had a room in the main building which was very large but very basic. Whether you eat either in the main restaurant or the bistro, the menus and prices are pretty similar. The choice is a tad limited and the costs are rather puzzling. Some dishes are good value and quite filling whereas others are very small and expensive. Furthermore a bread roll costs €1.50 whereas a very nice glass of wine starts at just €2.40! The buffet breakfast however is a disappointment. Barely anything hot and a very limited selection of cold meats, cheeses, croissants etc.
