“Excellent short-stay property in a fabulous location.”

The property is on the Plaza Mayor, with direct entry from the street. It is a historic building and surrounded by many others. We occupied room 001, which was very good for our small dog as it is the only one with a glass-enclosed terrace. He loved watching the people in the Plaza Mayor, below. The room is decorated in a traditional style and is very comfortable. The beds are quite firm, which is our preference. Cleanliness was of a high standard, particularly in the bathroom. In the evening, we were concerned about the noise from people in the cafes and bars below us, but we needn't have been. When we closed the wooden shutters it was suddenly very quiet, as if someone had switched off the outside world. The only negatives are that Ciudad Rodrigo is a nightmare for parking and the property has a long stone stairway to access the reception/rooms. Neither is a major issue for anyone able-bodied and both issues are fairly normal for a property in a protected area. The staff are very helpful. We were booked in by Maria, who took great care to ensure we had parked in a permitted zone. The city itself can be seen in a day. It has many old buildings in a good state of repair and is very beautiful. The walk around the city walls is 2 kilometres in length and fairly even.

“Former Medieval prison is a great place to stay.”
Terrific overnight stay in this 400 year old building which used to house the local prisoners. Oh, how it has changed! Right in the middle of the beautiful Plaza Mayor, plenty of cafes and restaurants and inexpensive parking. The proprietress is a great hostess and extremely helpful. Highly recomme… more

Everything was perfect from the instance we arrived. Everything was perfect from the instance we arrived. The place was like an old mansion but later we knew that it was a prison:-) it has a wonderful vibe, the room is really big and the bathroom also, clean and comfortable. Maybe it isn’t luxurious but we only needed a place to spend the night. The manager or the owner is very sweet and friendly and suggested places to go in details. The best part is that it’s pet friendly and for free. Cuidad Rodrigo itself was a nice surprise.

It's a pension, or what the locals would call a hostal, not a hotel. There are no services of any kind (no food, laundry, no vending, no staff, nothing). It's a pension, or what the locals would call a hostal, not a hotel. There are no services of any kind (no food, laundry, no vending, no staff, nothing). All rooms have two single beds (no double beds). Wi-Fi is fast and free. Having said that, it is a great place to stay. It is located right downtown on a main square in the old city. The building is historic, and the rooms are very nice and well soundproofed. The lady who administers the facility is fluent in both French & Spanish (and a wee bit of English), and she is a very gracious hostess.

Strong points: Right in the heart of Ciudad Rodrigo on the Plaza Mayor. Paid parking (not expensive) available right in front of the Hostal. Free parking available near the market, around 500 metres away. Restaurants & bars within a few steps. Friendly owner. Historic building. Weak points: All rooms are on the first floor and one has to negotiate a staircase with thick ropes as handrails. The stone staircase is very impressive and quaint but not very handy if you have difficulties with stairs. Particularly not with luggage. No lift available. Beds tightly made up with sheets and blankets. Long pillows. When will Iberian hoteliers wake up to duvets and normal pillows? On balance: Average.
