An excellent 2* hotel & a very good value given the average prices in Bilbao. Welcoming, comfortable, clean and well kept. We were not bothered by noise from other rooms as other travellers have said although the street traffic can be a little disturbing at times with the windows open. Ideally situated for the Guggenheim & a 15-120 minute walk along the river into the centre . There are easier ways to find it on foot than those given by a previous traveller - you do not have to cross the busy road or go down the steps off the bridge! Get off at the 1st stop on the airport bus on Almeda Ricalde. Turn right and make your way across the red La Salve bridge. Stay on the left hand side & take the elevator on the bridge - look for a yellow tower with green railings, a red door & an elevator sign- & descend to street level opposite a large mural of 2 women. Cross the road and go right under the bridge, then follow the footpath to the left up the hill , past a little square on your right , the Haven bar & the Ministry of the Interior on your left & up some steps. As you round a corner, there is children's playground on your left & you should be able to see La salve come into view to your right. There is a good supermarket & local bars in Plaza Funiculare where the funicular goes from - on leaving la Salve, pass the playground , cross the road, bear left down a ramp, pass some murals of the old port & you will come to an elevator which goes down to Plaza Funiculare . You need to be comfortable with walking to make the most of Bilbao.

“Basic but good”
This pension is nice! The room is comfortable but chilly at night, staff was friendly. A bit confusing to find the right way to get to the pension at first time but it’s ok when you realise that location is very good.

We stayed two night at La Salve and found the room to be clean and the bathroom modern with a good shower. The breakfast is coffee or tea with small cakes. It will get you through a few hours before you find a more substantial meal. Bring earplugs as there will most likely be noise from the nearby busy road. The wifi works best in the dining room. We chose the pension due to its proximity to the old town (casco viejo) and Guggenheim. We arrived by bus from the airport (a real bargain for under 2 euros). It drops you off, the 1st stop, a block past the Guggenheim. Walk back on the opposite side of the street from where you're dropped off, across the bridge, on the pedestrian sidewalk. The road will curve to the right. If there is no traffic, cross the street when you come to a set of stairs. Otherwise, take the stairs that lead you under the road to the opposite side. From there, you will see other stairs further down the road that go down several flights. Follow them all the way down. You will see the pension sign on the side of the bldg. almost at the foot of the steps. This may sound confusing but will make sense if you're walking and trying to figure out how to find this place. The pension also has some reserved spots in the secure parking garage of their bldg. for 10 euros/night. A GPS would be helpful if driving here from the airport.

Positives: - short walk from airport bus stop and Guggenheim - friendly and helpful check in staff - pretty comfortable bed Negatives: - room smelled of cigarette smoke even though the rooms are non-smoking. We found evidence of cigarettes on the window ledge, likely from the last guest who ignored the rules - I sleep quite deeply but my partner was disturbed by noise and light from outside so didn’t sleep very well Overall it was fairly basic accommodation but suitable for the night. We booked very last minute so didn’t expect the most value but if we had more options we would likely have booked somewhere else, especially if we were staying longer than one night.

Yes, I'm afraid so.....if you like mountaineering La Salve is for you. how to get there..... From the Guggenheim museum you can take a lift up the bridge lift walk across bridge, through a lovely wee square (Mini cafe nice for breakfast) Then a very steep climb up steps and winding road. No lift so be prepared to walk up two flights to gifts floor. We managed it, for 4 days, my aunty in her 80s and me nearly 70 but It was no mean feat!! Very comfortable though basic room. I'd advise not trying the coffee machine as the drink is vile but you are welcomed to use the microwave and sit in their dinning room (no food available). staff very friendly but lacking in any basic tourist info.
