A week ago my wife and I together with our son and his family stayed there once more for two nights in connection with a family event in Stavanger which took place in Stavanger. (The first time was in September 2021). As one of our grandchildren has special needs we asked for a larger rom for them. Our son, his wife and their children got a big family room, more or less like a suite with plenty of space for them and the wheelchair. They also had a big bathroom, In fact we had exactly the same room as two years ago, room 530 and 532, my wife and I got a business class room next to the rest of the family. At breakfast we were also offered a special table, with plenty of space also for the wheelchair. Breakfast was excellent as usual , with a sumptous selection of dishes, for all generations. This time we found parking spaces outside the hotel, as the garage was filled up with cars and it is also challenging to drive inside tha garage with small and narrow parking spaces. The staff we met was helpful, attentive, "service with a smile", it seemed. Definitely a place which delivered also "The second time around". Stayed here as a weekend getaway with the family. Overall, we were very satisfied with the location, standard of the room, cleanliness, and hotel in general and would stay here again. A couple of critics would be that during breakfast a number of the hot plate offerings were empty and seemed to take an age to be refilled. Perhaps a lack of staff? In addition, we found that you now need to pre-book the hotel swimming pool, but this can’t be pre-booked, and no booking until 07:00am on the actual day. The pool’s water temperature seemed excessively cold, especially as we had young children which somewhat spoilt their overall enjoyment of the pool experience. On a final note, if you like milk in your coffee or tea make sure to get some before breakfast is finished as the milk machine is locked up until the following morning.

“Sadly, the Negatives Outweighed the Positives”

We have stayed in Scandic hotels before, and knowing what to expect, we booked the Royale for a couple of nights as part of a longer trip. I'd love to be able to give more than a 'average', but for a couple of reasons I can't. More of that later... Firstly the positives: Very good location. Easy to find, and a short walk down into the town centre with all its attractions (so long as you are fit as it's down / up the steep hill. Excellent breakfast. If you know what Scandic breakfasts are like, you will know what I mean. And the staff worked hard to keep stocks up. The hotel was very busy first thing; from 0630 - 0700 there was some industrial scale feeding taking place. From 0800 it became very busy again as the other rooms seem to be filled with families enjoying the autumn holidays. So thank you to the breakfast staff for keeping things going. Bikes for loan. Excellent idea, and again a Scandic thing. Not what we're used to as these are heavy beasts with just three gears, but good enough for getting around the local islands and to the Saturday morning parkrun. The negatives: Parking. The Scandic car park was not available due to work in progress. While communication on this was good with options, and we fully understand work needs to be done, it raised two issues: arrival and departure was inconvenient as it was not safe or legal to drop-off outside the hotel. Secondly, the preferred alternative in St Olav's was considerably more expensive than using Scandic's own under-hotel park. The room. Booking through booking.com showed an image of the room with the window and a lovely external view. We were disappointed to find we had been allocated a room facing internally into the hotel. No view, no natural light; we did not find the room at all relaxing to stay in even though there was lots of storage space, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was clean and well stocked. Our advice is to specifically request a room that faces outside, not inside. In sum, the negatives outweighed the positives and we left with a sense of disappointment. We will probably try one of the other hotels next time. Sorry.
