This lovely hotel was the first of three different Thon hotels we stayed in during the course of our two-week visit to Scandinavia, and all three of them offered superb accommodations and service. This hotel provided a good introduction to the high quality of the Thon Hotel chain, so once we experienced the comfort and charm of the Thon Hotel Cecil, we eagerly looked forward to the next two Thon hotels that we would stay in while in Norway. This hotel was booked for us as part of a tour, so we did not do our own booking or select our own room category. The tour company booked us into room 414, one of the hotel’s “standard rooms,” but it was absolutely perfect, just the kind of room we would have reserved if we had done so on our own. Our room overlooked a light-filled interior courtyard which was the location of the breakfast room down below, and being on an upper floor with no window onto outside traffic and noise, we greatly enjoyed the quiet at night. The weather in Oslo during our stay was quite warm, and the air-conditioning in our room kept us cool and comfortable. The daily breakfast, included in our room rate, impressed us with its wide variety of hot and cold foods, all delicious and beautifully presented. The entire hotel staff were friendly and engaging, and we were so impressed by their beautiful English. Our room was impeccably clean and beautifully decorated. The room had a comfortable bed and a walk-in shower, which we loved for its safety and ease of use. We aren’t handicapped, but we don’t like stepping into a high bathtub to take a shower, so the walk-in shower in this room was a real plus. Our room also had two upholstered chairs, something which travelers rarely find in a standard room. Just inside our room door was a built-in wardrobe with plenty of space for our clothes and luggage, and beside it was a platform with an electric kettle, two big ceramic coffee mugs, and an assortment of teas and coffees. Our room had a large flat-screen TV, but we didn’t use it, preferring instead to sit and read in the evening in those cozy chairs. The hotel is located just a 4-minute walk from a tram stop, and we used the tram to travel out to Frogner Park to see the Vigeland sculptures. From the hotel, we could walk to the waterfront in just minutes, meaning that we didn’t even need the tram when we visited the National Museum, the Akershus Fortress, and the Resistance Museum, all of which could be reached in an easy walk of about ten minutes. On our last evening, after having had a full but tiring day of sightseeing, we decided to take advantage of the dinner buffet which the hotel’s restaurant staff offers from 6PM to 9PM, Monday through Thursday. It was convenient to simply go downstairs to the breakfast room and find an inviting buffet of soups, salads, pastas, breads, and drinks. The cost was roughly 16 American dollars per person, which we thought quite reasonable. The food was very good, and the serving staff were just as friendly and attentive as the staff we encountered during breakfast. For quality, comfort, location, and service, we would choose a Thon hotel over any others. Later in our journey, we stayed in the Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz in Bergen, and then, when we returned to Oslo by train from Bergen, we chose the Thon Hotel Opera for its proximity to the train station. All three of these properties are superb and highly recommended.

“Great motel”

Great motel. Very clean. In a great location. Breakfast was amazing. Our first time in Europe so was little nervous about booking a hotel not knowing anything about the area or the motel. As stated above motel was great. If go back to Oslo would definitely stay there again

Fantastic breakfast. Close to sightseeing. Walked to the Norwegian cruise ship, about 25 minutes through the harbour area (nice promenade). Room small but well thought out. The Thon Hotel Cecil in Oslo is wonderfully located a half block from Slottsparken, an oasis of greenery and fountains that is bounded on one end by the Parliament and the other by the Royal Palace (and close to a Hop-on, Hop-off bus stop). An inauspicious lobby was brightened by the presence of an exceedingly friendly and helpful Filipina named Ruth Myr and her colleague, Marielle, both of whom made our stay more pleasant and comfortable. Our corner room on the 4th floor had a balcony that overlooked the interior courtyard and breakfast room, the offerings which were bountiful and delicious. When my husband asked about having some cooked oatmeal (which was not one of the offerings), a bowl was delivered to our table within five minutes. Our room had a comfortable bed and two reading chairs. Although there are not many places to put your luggage or personal items, Ruth quickly accommodated us with luggage racks. On the 7th floor there is a very large lounge with fresh coffee and snacks, comfortable seating and work places, and a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
