Over the last 10+ years, I have stayed at the Commodore many times. The big draw is the sense of quiet luxury, combined with friendly service and comfortable rooms. On my recent trip I stayed at the hotel twice - both in a garden suite and a business level room. Both rooms were well equipped and cozy. Overall, the staff at this hotel are world-class in their approach to helping guests feel welcome and assisting with requests. As the wife of an ex-pat who frequently returns to New Zealand, the Commodore is genuinely my favourite place to stay in the entire country. I was impressed with the lovely Judy who collected us from the airport and made sure that we were checked in promptly. We had just come off a 25 hour journey at 11am and Judy very kindly allowed us to check into our suite early. She's an absolute star and a real credit to the hotel. Garden Suite: I've stayed in this room before. It has a lovely view over the trees where you can step out onto a balcony and watch fantails from the comfortable sofa. The kitchen is well equipped and you can feasibly cook a full meal. The separate bedroom is comfortable and has plenty of storage space. The bathroom is the only thing that really needs improving as it is quite dated. There's a bath that has a shower attachment that is not intuitive to use. Everything works - it's just a little old. Business room: Although not as spacious as the suite, the bedroom and bathroom were modern and well equipped. The bed was amazing and I had the best sleep. The walk-in shower was lovely too. Room tip: if you want to use the pool - ask for a ground floor room near reception. Staff: This is a family business and everyone takes pride in serving guests. It is rare to find a team of people who are so dedicated to making visitors feel welcome. I'd like to say a big thank you to the lovely gentleman who takes care of maintenance - your help and know-how made a real difference to our stay. Also, I appreciate the amazing reception team for all their kindness. Breakfast: The continental breakfast was delicious and great value for $30, but this only includes filter coffee rather than barista coffee. There's a lovely choice of fruit, breads, cakes and yoghurts. I especially liked the bircher muesli. The cooked breakfast buffet is available for an extra $7 and is also delicious and very good value. Gym: The gym has everything you need for a decent work out (weights, bike, treadmill, cross trainer and rowing machine). The machines are not the newest, but everything works well. It was refreshing to see that the space is well used by guests. The owners are sports fans and there is some incredible memorabilia on the walls. Pool: The swimming pool and jacuzzi area is nice. It's a little older but that doesn't detract from the experience. One slightly strange thing is that from the changing rooms you have to cross a carpeted area to get to the pool. One therefore needs to dry off well before crossing over this area. The sauna looked good but I didn't try it. Location: It was actually quite nice to be outside of the city. I like the proximity to the airport. It's also really easy to get into the city either by bus, taxi or car. Thank you for a lovely visit to Christchurch. I look forward to returning in the future.

This review reflects my experience for both my stays in October and November 2024. To the management and staff at the Commodore in Christchurch, New Zealand, BRAVO! During both stays, your hotel was well maintained, and it's appearance was way more appealing than the traditional box hotels I typically travel with. The wood accents and abundant lighting made for a cheery ambiance. The gardens were well kept, and the enclosed pool area was well ventilated and did not have a lingering chlorine smell like so many do. Your restaurant was another standout. The warm, inviting fireplace and accompanying references to the Air National Guard unit supporting the Antarctica missions were a great addition to the food prepared with purpose and style, not just something produced and plated in a hurry. BRAVO especially to the staff. Mike the manager obviously led by example as he offered to help with my bags. Everyone was helpful and greeted me with a smile along with the typical New Zealand hospitality. For those considering a stay in Christchurch, don't let the location close to the airport sway you for fear of noise. Not once was I disturbed even when napping in the middle of the day. Rooms excellent, close to airport, quiet, complimentary bus shuttle, wonderful restaurant, helpful front desk. Assisted in arranging a taxi service and bag collection from Our room . Would definitely stay again when visiting Christchurch.

“Comfortable, convenient, perfect for recovering from a 30 hour trip”

We really loved this hotel. We arrived after a 30 hour trip from the US and it was the perfect choice. Every employee we saw was friendly, smiling, efficient, professional, and seemed happy with their job and their employers. I called for the shuttle from baggage claim and they pulled up to the meeting point as we arrived so we didn’t have to wait at all. The room was a great size with all the amenities. The bed was very comfortable and the pillows were among the best I’ve ever had at a hotel (and I’ve traveled a lot for work). Plenty of parking if you need it, nicely landscaped grounds, and a quiet area. It is not the cheapest place in town but for us it was worth every penny. After that trip I knew we would need comfort and convenience and we definitely got that here.
