This quaint historical budget hotel founded in 1867 has charm and character located at one corner of Calles 57 and 60 within Parque de los Hidalgos. The three storey hotel is laid out in a type of square with a central courtyard, rooms facing inwards to the courtyard, large doors ( some upper half open with screen mesh ) and at least one window. Very centrally located near the main square, shops, restaurants and major historical sites. The room was kept clean and tidy by the staff, mostly done while out for breakfast, The A/C worked without any issues and the king bed was comfy, however, not all can ever be perfect, small closet space, small bathroom with very limited warm water, three days only in 21 with lukewarm water for a shower, otherwise ice cold, one room key, no room safe, limited lighting makes reading difficult. The pool is located on the top floor, one drawback, no washrooms, have to go back to your room or all the way to the ground floor. Also the hotel photos show many loungers with pads around the pool there were actually only two working loungers and chairs. Not a place to hangout for any length of time. If you choose breakfast with your room rate (a la carte available), it is served by the courtyard near the side. Being in a semitropical, humid environment, biting bugs can be an issue, North American mosquito spray did not help.

Narrow frontage faces an attractive square, and inside there is a lovely indoor/outdoor garden. Restaurant was well-ordered with table service. Sadly our room didn't live up to the promise of the remainder of the hotel. Beds and bed linen was clean, but the room was quite dark and poky with a manky wooden cupboard, a tiny bathroom, and a wooden shutter window out to a corridor. The best news was I added to my wildlife spots in Mexico with my one and only sighting of a live cockroach which I surprised by turning on the light during a nighttime bathroom visit. Noise insulation not good either. Breakfast was pretty good.

There's no parking outside, as the hotel is located in the corner of a small square. The lobby is microscopic. There's one tiny lift to the upper floors. The rooms mostly surround a large central garden atrium, and windows look inwards to the corridors/ walkways, rather than to the outside. My room was average size with two ¾ beds, confusing light-switches, intermittent WiFi, tiny bathroom with nowhere to put anything. Aircon, but no fridge & nowhere for case, so had to go on other bed. Floor, ceiling & walls stained/ marked. Tiles cracked. Everything very tired – not impressed. Breakfast was a joke - no buffet, but sit down and order. You could have fruit or fruit juice to start with (but not both!) and you could not have a refill on the juice (one glass only!). Then you had to order main course from the waiter - the usual scrambled eggs several ways. Bread was like tasteless cardboard, coffee wishy-washy - very poor. Not impressed.
