First the great news: colonial location (it was a monastery, then a school). Great intimate central courtyard, and great food for breakfast. So close to all the action in the central government buildings, banks and restaurants. The not so good news: It is A colonial location (it was a monastery, then a school). IT REALLY NEEDS AN UPGRADE TO ITS ROOMS. LOW WATER PRESSURE, AND OLD AIR CONDITIONERS NEED TO BE FIXED. BUT.... the ambiance, the pool, and the food make it popular with European tourists, and savvy yanks! WE WILL RETURN NEXT TIME WE GO TO CHICHEN ITZA, UXMAL, AND THE GREAT TOWN WHERE THE BEST GUAYABERAS, AND WOMEN'S DRESSES ARE MADE: kimbilá-yucatán!!!!!

“Could Do Better”

There's no parking outside, as the hotel is located in the corner of a small square. The lobby is microscopic. There's one tiny lift to the upper floors. The rooms mostly surround a large central garden atrium, and windows look inwards to the corridors/ walkways, rather than to the outside. My room was average size with two ¾ beds, confusing light-switches, intermittent WiFi, tiny bathroom with nowhere to put anything. Aircon, but no fridge & nowhere for case, so had to go on other bed. Floor, ceiling & walls stained/ marked. Tiles cracked. Everything very tired – not impressed. Breakfast was a joke - no buffet, but sit down and order. You could have fruit or fruit juice to start with (but not both!) and you could not have a refill on the juice (one glass only!). Then you had to order main course from the waiter - the usual scrambled eggs several ways. Bread was like tasteless cardboard, coffee wishy-washy - very poor. Not impressed.

This is a 3 star review based on averaging 1 star concerns and 5 star aspects. 1-star concerns relate to safety. Two things that were concerning: (1) my father slipped and fell in the bathroom at 4AM and lost consciousness. When I yelled loudly for help in the courtyard (including "hospital!!" because we thought he maybe had a heart attack or was otherwise dying), NO ONE RESPONDED. The hotel is an open air building all facing an inner courtyard so someone should have heard my loud yelling, especially when pitch quiet at 4AM. Thankfully, my father was OK later that night and next day. (2) When I told this story to the front desk the next day, the woman was not at all concerned that a guest could have died at their property. I asked to confirm that someone works the night shift, so I am not sure why no one responded that night. She asked if we called the front desk that night, which I did not because my father was possibly dying so no, I did not have time to figure out what the front desk number was at 4AM. Also no one responded to me YELLING for help, so I doubt someone would pick up the phone. She said she would tell the night shift, but there was otherwise no follow up. I also provided this story on a guest comment card when we left - also no follow up. 5-star - hotel is in a great location in the center of town near the main plaza, and it is a charming building with a lovely courtyard and rooftop pool. As other reviews mention, the rooms are rustic/simple/basic but they are perfectly serviceable, especially given the price and location. If not for the safety concerns, I would stay again.
