In early May 2024 my wife and I stayed at the Cameron Highlands Resort, Malaysia. Malaysian culture in general was very impressive, the nation has developed a cosmopolitan atmosphere which is a mixture of local traditions and Islam. Malaysia is part of the British Commonwealth and therefore has a high number of citizens that are either of Indian or Chinese descent. Hence, Malaysian culture is very tolerant of both ethnicity and religion. The Cameron Highlands Resort Hotel has a very colonial feel to it, whereby they offer afternoon tea as well as some traditional British dishes, as well as some local dishes. Just like many other parts of Malaysia, The Cameron Highlands Resort is very serious about excellent customer service and do their upmost best to accommodate their guests within their means. The Cameron Highlands sits within a temperate zone and therefore is the centre of Malaysia’s home grown tea industry. But the biggest bonus associated with visiting the Cameron Highlands is the intact rain forests that are the home to very diverse plant and animal life. If you love nature and like to go on an adventure, the highlands are a must. To give context, in their jungles you may find the Malaysian Peacock-Pheasant (and a large assortment of bird species), the Siamang Gibbon (and other species of primate), the wide variety of snakes (as is found everywhere in Malaysia), the beautiful Blue Pansy Butterfly (and an enormous repertoire of insect species), and a large variety of orchid and pitcher plants (plus more). If you have the best luck on your side, you might even spot a Sunda Clouded Leopard, a Leopard Cat or even a Malaysian Tiger! These cats have learnt to share their territory with humans, and therefore it is extremely rare for humans and these cats to cross paths. It is therefore highly advised that you recruit a locally qualified guide to take you through the jungle, which can be arranged by the hotel. Our guide Ah Tan, was a member of R.E.A.C.H. (The Regional Environmental Awareness Cameron Highlands). Therefore, Ah Tan was a qualified nature conservationist and an excellent hiking guide. Do not go hiking without the right footwear. This is a big shout to the resort reception staff: Kimie, Chloe, Anji, Nandar, Yau and Hafiz Also a big shout to the kitchen staff: Bal, Santosh, Ravi, Kirtan, Sudeep and Myint.

When a hotel lists feeding the fish as an activity you have to ask if there might be a lack of awareness of modern travellers and their expectations in the 21st century. There is no question that Cameron Highlands resort is a colonial style building trading on past glories but the drive to the hotel brings into sharp focus the development of the area and horrific destruction of large swathes of forest. The hotel rooms are pleasant enough, the towel elephant an interesting touch! The bathroom very small and dated. Our room had an interconnecting door and there did not appear to be any sound proofing, our neighbours heated debate clearly heard. The Saturday set menu for the restaurant situation was interesting and not for us. Like others have noted there were warnings about renovations, the building next door also appeared to be having a major face lift. On a Saturday afternoon the only sounds heard above the vocal neighbours was that of the leaf blower! We could have turned the TV up but with only 2 English language channels both showing football we had few options. After 2 hours we decided to check out and move on with our trip around Malaysia, the desk staff were a little bemused but helpful and we were soon back on the road happy to put the Cameron Highlands behind us.

It’s expensive but it’s not upfront about what it offers. There’s no heating in this hotel and, when the temperature drops to 15C at night in the Highlands, you really feel it. There’s no mention of that in the online description, so be warned! And you are only informed when you arrive (by a note from the management left on your dressing table) that there will be noisy renovation work. It’s supposed to start at 09:30 but the banging and sanding which will disturb your stay actually kicked off at 08:00. It calls itself a resort but there’s only a tired snooker table and a computer games room available. The staff are well trained but their polish does not hide the fact that there’s not much behind the scenes to justify the high prices. “Greenwashing” is mentioned extensively. You are politely asked to save the planet by re-using towels and bed linen; there is no physical bedside folder with all the usual hotel information, instead you have to scan a QR code and read the stuff on your phone. But disposable cheap paper napkins are offered at all meals except for dinner in the main restaurant where multi-use cloth serviettes are provided. As for food, breakfast was good, hot pot dinner was excellent, but the Great Highland Roast on Saturday nights was distinctly underwhelming. Chicken Liver pate was warm on the top but solidly cold at the bottom of the glass it came in. It was poorly seasoned and had chunks of onion in it which had not been emulsified properly. Roast potatoes, described as triple cooked, turned out to be waxy new potatoes that had been cooked in their skins instead of being the floury sort that traditional roasts are made of. There was no gravy to go with the tough roast lamb or on the Yorkshires. Pepper, mushroom or mint sauce was offered instead. There was no trace of rosemary or garlic that normally is used when cooking a lamb leg. All this was mentioned at the time and an offer to replace the pate with something else was made but declined. We were told the chef would be made aware of our comments. He may have been told but he never came out to discuss it. A free scoop of ice cream was provided as a consolation. It was a quiet time in the Highlands- there were only 22 people in the dining room - so there was nothing but the Great Roast menu on offer with chicken, or vegetarian options. It smacked of penny pinching and shouldn’t happen in a luxury hotel no matter what the time of year.
