“Icon of Almaty”

Highly recommended for tourists. It is almost all walking distance of the tourist attractions and historical landmarks of kazakhstan. But the hotel services is not top rated. Rooms are old. Food is average. But reasonable price. Still highly recommended when planning a trip to almaty

“Nice, Iconic Hotel in Great Location”

We stayed at the Hotel Kazakhstan when in Almaty during our trip to Kazakhstan in June-July 2024. We stayed a total of 6 nights, 3 upon our first arrival in Kazakhstan, the 3 more after a week driving around the southwestern part of the country before heading up north. Each time, we had two rooms: one for ourselves and one for our adult daughter, who was travelling with us. We opted for this hotel for several reasons: it is an iconic, historic place, once the tallest building in Kazakhstan; despite changes since independence, it has interesting, classic Soviet architectural style; it has a great location in the heart of the city near a metro station, Kok Tobe, and many other sights; it was a reasonable price. Overall, we were very happy with the hotel. One our first stay, we choose two of the higher-end, recently renovated rooms in the middle floors, 8 and 9. When we booked, the staff explained that these were the most luxurious and recently renovated. They were indeed very nice. The bathrooms were attractive and stylish, with excellent shower facilities, plus nice toilets, sinks, cabinets, etc. The floor of the bathrooms was heated gently, a nice plus. The shower in our daughter's room for some reason had weaker water pressure but our room had excellent water pressure in the shower an the shower fixtures (hand -held plus large soaking top shower head) were excellent, giving a great shower experience. The beds and bedclothes and pillows in these rooms were excellent, very nice,new, and comfortable. The rooms had nice light fixtures for different lighting options. They had pretty good views towards mountains. The negative is that the rooms, like those in the hotel in general, are rather small and the windows are rather small as well. For the second 3 nights, we intentionally chose rooms on the top floors for a different experience. We wanted a larger room for ourselves at this time, and the larger rooms were on upper floors which were not recently renovated. The rooms were more bare, without the nice lighting features and the bathrooms retained older shower-tubs and other facilities, and were rather cramped. These rooms were definitely not as nice, but they were nice still, and again our shower had an excellent hand-held shower head with great pressure, a major plus in our opinions. The beds were sufficiently comfortable. Also, the staff had explained that these rooms were not as nice because not renovated, so we knew what we were getting into. The hotel has seen some redecorating in parts of the public areas, to its detriment, impairing some of the classic Soviet deign. However, it still retains much of this inside, in hallways, the lobby, and the breakfast area. Outside, the building is all classic Soviet design of the era (late 1970s, early 1980s) and well worth a visit just to see this iconic building. The breakfast buffet was overall very good. It was somewhat inconsistent, however, in both the options and quality, but generally there was plenty of good food of a wide range: meat, vegetables, pickles, poridge, soup, borek, eggs, and more. The breakfast area is nice, in the upper mezzanine overlooking the lobby, with nice views of the lobby area. It also has a nice outdoor seating area, with some tables in the open on the balcony and others in a glass conservatory which was left largely opened in the warm weather. The hotel clearly has some uneven qualities, though. Some areas and rooms definitely need to be renovated or spruced up to be nicer, and it seemed like some people were even staying on floors which were in the middle of being renovated. However, it was clear that they were indeed actively renovating the hotel in stages and those places which they had renovated were very nice indeed. Moreover, when you book, you can get information from the staff about which rooms are nicer, which fully renovated, etc. Overall, we found the staff to be very helpful and accommodating, and most had a good command of English. There are restaurants in the hotel as well, but the only one we tried was the Pinta brewpub, which was good. The location is great. It's fairly easy to get to and from the hotel due to the major street its on at the eastern edge of the city centre, yet it is convenient to excellent restaurants and tourist sights close by, with a metro stop a short walk away. The Kok Tobe gondola is almost right next to it. Overall, we had a great experience. It is not a 5-star review, but it is better than 4. We would give it about 4.5 stars overall, but we'll give it 4 just because rounding up to 5 seems too high. We would gladly stay here again, especially since the price was reasonable, even for the nicer rooms, and we are definitely glad that we did stay in this iconic place.

I recently had 11 days trip in Kazakhstan with my friend. We stayed in this Hotel from Oct 30- Nov 1, 2024. This is one of the Landmarks of Almaty so we cannot miss the chance to experience what this hotel could offer. Let’s start with the room interior, it’s clean and comfy, we were on the 19th floor and we got the best view I must say. The food selection is quite good during breakfast. The staff were friendly and approachable. There is also a souvenir shop inside the hotel which has a variety of items you can choose from. There are lots of restaurants as well around the hotel, grocery, and a Pub. Due to lots of Guests they are catering every peak seasons like Autumn, you might need to wait overnight or several hours to get what you have requested. For example, flat iron for clothes.
